Not sure how/when i got gum on my bike, but noticed it all over the rear of my bike after a ride. It was fresh kind of gum it seemed and it was pretty hot out so it gooed all over parts of the frame and wheel. I scrapped the majority of it off but there's still gum residue left.

My brother recommended goo gone, but i haven't gotten my hands on it, though i'm not sure if it's safe to use on the clear coat of the carbon frame. Any other proven ideas on how to remove this stuff?

Its citric based should be ok, just test in an inconspicuous area first.

Rub it with an ice cube, that should harden it up and it should be easier to remove.

That makes sense. When you drink cold water with gum it sometimes gets flaky and difficult to chew. Maybe use a paper towel or something to get it off.

I use Goof Off to remove gum. Works great. I always follow up with a sponge and water, just so that the Goof Off doesn't stay on the frame.

This happened to me a few days back. totally sucked, got all over both tires and its sort of worked its way onto the rubber and wont come off. i waited until it got hard and then just peeled it all off the frame/wheels. use some grease-cutting soap and get the rest off your brakes, wheels, frame. damn bastards spitting gum on the street

+1 I guarantee this will work, my truck was vandalized a few years ago and gum was stuck all over it and in Texas heat it completely melted and stuck all over it. WD-40 took it off in about 30 seconds worked amazingly well and in very small amounts so I don't see in any bad repercussions

The clear coat should be the equivalent of auto clearcoat if the bike is of decent quality. You should be able to clean it with almost anything.

Remove tires and grips, soak the bike overnight in acetone. Re-lube completely before use. Also gets that shiny black buildup around the brake and shifter cables off.

If you're not willing to do that, try using canned air held upside down to freeze it and chip it off.

Way way back I worked in a cinema. Every night our cleaners would find a dozen or so wads of gum stuck in the carpet or on the seats. With a compressed air gun ( similar to CO2 pumps we use only industrial size ) they would give it a blast. The gum froze and they'd pull it up/off with out a trace.

No sure what the effect of CO2 would be on your frame but using a cube of ice directly on the gum should work on the same principle ( though it may take a little longer to freeze through) Way cheeper than WD40 with no chemical residue to worry about.

Thanks, i'll try the wd40, think i might have a can laying around somewhere.

Not sure if the ice cube will work, i've already removed most of the gum, what's left is the sticky residue, kinda like what's left from removing old tape just stickier. I guess if i did the ice cube method from the beginning it may have worked out.

I stepped in some gum a few weeks ago and got some nice gooey gum stuck in my cleats and pedals. I really wanted to punch the chewer of that piece of gum in the face pretty badly. The gum came off pretty easily when my bike/shoes were no longer in the hot baking sun. Someone beat me to the CO2 idea. If you really need it off, just blast a few shots from your CO2 inflator and it will come off very easily.

I left my gum outside for a few minutes, and some jerk ran over it with his bike and then stepped on it.
