Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any issues wearing bike shorts over non-padded lycra briefs?

May be riding in some cooler weather tomorrow, if the rain gets out of here in time. I just got my first pair of padded cycling shorts today. I went with the Louis Garneau Pro Max Shorts, https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...83_-1___202491

Would there be any problems wearing my unpadded lycra briefs underneath these, and then probably longer pants on top of them?

I wear lycra blend sport short under my bib shorts for all rides, all year - no problems whatsoever for years. Don't know about the long pants but when I ride my MTB or my hybrid, I wear the above (switch to sport shorts then padded bike shorts then tights in winter), along with MTB style cargo shorts over them w/o any problems.

the liner is supposed to be against your skin

What do you mean by Liner? What's the difference between normal lycra cycling shorts, and liner shorts?

The briefs are Starter lycra boxer briefs, that I've been wearing for cycling and also running. For running, it makes chafing pretty much non-existent, and they are also moisture wicking. I just thought it might be a bit more comfy to have that against the skin than the pad in the cycling shorts. The texture of the pad doesn't appear too comfortable to me, but we'll see.

Well, lycra is better than cotton briefs I guess. But those chamios pads are generally comfortable against the skin. Some folks add a bit of cream before longer rides.

The liner shorts will get sweaty before your chamois can absorb the moisture. This will lead to chafing.

I rode with lycra boxer briefs under my cycling shorts for the first time the other day. I noticed that I didn't have chaffing but it was not more comfortable than just wearing the cycling shorts. It did however help me stay warmer. I should also point out that I only rode 30 miles like this so not a super long ride by any stretch.

No underwear under bike shorts or bibs. There is no benefit but there is potential discomfort.

+1
your own body heat should keep that region warm enough once you get going as long as you're not out in freezing weather. You should get some arm warmers, leg warmers and a lycra balaclava and maybe a wind vest because they'll warm the areas that are most likely to feel the cold

I haven't tried lycra, but cotton briefs are a huge negative with padded shorts. I was amazed at how much difference that little bit of cotton made.

No I don't ever wear cotton when running or biking. I've always worn the lycra briefs even before I got these new padded shorts.

Tell you what. Ride with the underpants. Then try riding commando. Stick with whatever is most comfortable. Chances are it'll be going without.

Three issues have been reported.
1) Friction between the 2 layers can generate enough heat to cause combustion.
2) Friction has also led to electrical discharges with sudden cardiac arrest.
3) Cancer from bacterial overgrowth.

Really this activity should not be condoned.

For me padded lycra and nothing underneath. If I'm on my MTB I might wear shorts over the top. I once wore jocks under lycra and the jock seams just dug into my skin making it painful and more so pulling the seams out of my skin.

OP - "cycling" shorts should have a chamois lining. some have a thick liner some have a thin liner. I prefer the thin type like what is in tri-shorts. these are what I have

Zoot Men's Endurance 8 Tri Short

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004JQOVQA/..._df_B004JQOVQA

I wear these alone or under other stuff

some people call the liner a pad. some people think the pad is for cushioning your butt on the seat but it is not for that. it is for moisture management.

now saddle up and ride!

IMO, it really depends on how far and how hard you ride. FWIW, bike shorts are designed to be worn without underwear.

I've ridden in some pretty cold temps (down to 20F) with just my cycling shorts and tights. Keep your core warm and the legs will follow.
