Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Las Vegas - Where to Ride ??

I'm going to be in Vegas next weekend and probably going to bring along the bike. If I do I plan on:

Day 1: Blue Diamond up to Red Rocks Loop and back.

Day 2. River Mountains Loop

Day 3: Anyone have any ideas? ( ideally should be out of the city ( or in city with out too many stoplights) , bike friendly shoulders, etc.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

Those are the 2 best routes in the area. If you do the RM trail loop, be sure to check out Hemenway Park in Boulder City. It's a nice place to take a break, and often you'll see big horned sheep grazing behind the tennis courts.

Valley of Fire is another good run. You can do an out and back, starting at the travel plaza off of I-15 and turning around at the entrance to the park, or pay the entry fee and head inside, then ride back to the travel plaza. Either way will give you a minimum of 40ish miles.

A lot of cyclists like The M Casino to Jean and then the Good Springs Extension. It's pretty flat heading out to Jean with a slight gradient as you climb to Good Springs. You can then have a beer at the Pioneer Saloon (the oldest saloon in Clark County) before the nice downhill all the way back to Jean.

Mt. Charleston (Lee Canyon Road) is a 16 mile climb to 8000' ending at the Ski Resort. Or you can also do Kyle Canyon Road and take it up to either the Mt. Charleston Resort or head up further to Cathedral Peak and the Mt Charleston Lodge. There's parking at the base on either road. If you're feeling really masochistic, ride up Kyle Canyon to just past the resort, hang a right and climb over to Lee Canyon Road, and then descend Lee Canyon. Ride along US95 (big bike lane so it's fairly safe) to get back to your car at Kyle Canyon.

I've never seen a burrow crossing the road on 159 (I have seen them on the side of the road) nor have I ever seen one inside Red Rock Canyon. But definitely beware stupid drivers inside the Red Rock Canyon Loop.

A bump and +2 on the suggestions- probably the best. Here are a few links you might look at as well with tried and true bike friendly routes. On the western side, Summerlin and on the eastern side, Henderson have both been designed/upgraded to be very bike friendly with wide streets, bike lanes and bike paths. Downtown is becoming that as well.

just to add to what he said

I lived in the area from 1996-2012 and found the area to be reasonably bike friendly. Like any big city, when riding on busy streets, you have to be aware that motorists may not see you, but it was rare that I had problems with drivers being aggressive to me.

Done it many times and never had a problem with the burrows BUT those little mini cars they rent out are another story - some folks pretending they were F1 cars

There are tons of cars going through the Red Rock loop.

I've found that riding a MTB in Vegas is more fun. Going in January for CES...bringing the MTB's again.

I've never had a problem with cars on the Red Rock loop, and the road is one way with 2 lanes.

Bootleg Canyon in Boulder City is phenomenal for mountain biking and has shuttle service on the weekends if you are too lazy to climb.

I drove through the loop with my GF and did see a number of cyclists. I was paying more attention to the red rocks more than to the road. I also did see a number of cyclists along the 160 (I think it was the 160)...and it was scary to see the speed they were getting passed by cars.

I think next year I'll do Outerbike instead of Interbike. I watched some of the Outerbike videos at Bootleg...looks really fun.

+1 for Red Rock. I did that for Viva Bike Vegas last year. Too bad they cancelled it this year.
