Out for a ride in the heat

Needed to go for a ride so pulled the Trek 600 IGH conversion out of the shed and went for one. I’d built this bike as a result of reading an article way back in the 70s in Bicycling! that said a lightweight IGH might be a perfect town bike; so since I had a nice 531 road bike in hand why not try?

Also as I age I feel drop bars harder and harder to justify so I put a set of VO porteur bars on….

Anyway, the ride went great - at first I felt a little cramped as the Porteur bars pull back quite a ways and I have them set low for saddle comfort but that soon went away. The Trek frame was a delight and transferred what little power I make quite well to the back wheel. I actually ended up only using two gears (Low and Normal) for the entire ride so I will likely put a larger sprocket on the back to give more relief for larger hills while maintaining a nice speed in town.

I used to have my 71 Raleigh International set up as a lightweight drop bar three-speed IGH, and out of all the various bike configurations I put it through, that was my favorite by far.

yeah - the city hosted a master bridge builders convention and the result was a proper old style covered bridge built with no nails right in the heart of the city…. On a lovely bike and walking trail to boot….
