Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mysterious

I was towards the end of a ride I walked into a grocery store to get some things so i wouldn't have to go back out immediately. While i was walking through the isles i was stopped by a girl asking if i was a cyclist " with the helmet an the sunglasses that go super fast". I responded with " i think so". She proceeded to tell me that she always see cyclists out and about and always thinks we are so mysterious because she can never see our face, but thinks we all must be super hot because we exercise so much. It ended with that. Wish i would have said some more but the cat had taken ahold of my tongue.

Ill take it as a compliment.

Has anyone else gotten such a strange encounter of what people think of cyclists?

This will sound silly, but from a girl's perspective... it's really true about male cyclists. You can't really tell what they look like. I assume they're all good looking until I see them later on the road. That girl said something that I've always secretly thought...

My SO has the 'hots' for Fabian Cancellara - until he takes his sunnies off that is!!!

She reckons that many of the pro cyclists look awesome until they take their glasses off.

I wear (prescription) glasses all the time - 'nuff said!

These days ordinary people seem to think that anyone that exercises are fitness freaks; I guess that says something about them.

At least she didn't stand there staring at your butt... and don't worry.. your game isn't sunk(if that is why you were tongue tied) - just be sure to say hello next time.

I was stopped ( doing a track stop) next to a woman at an intersection once and she actually backed up to get a better look at my posterior ( I was so freaked out I lost my balance.....bet she thought that was hot ! )

When you see a good looking, thin and obviously active woman in cycling gear, understand that some women look at you and see the same thing.

Keep the helmet on though, Bart Simpson hair doesn't cut it.

The correct response is, "You know, under this super hero costume I'm just an ordinary guy like everyone else."

Depending on your confidence, you can add, "Well, maybe not entirely ordinary."

Awesome, congrats!

And +1 on the super hero response. If she doesn't laugh, just move on. Unless ofc she's foreign and hot and it got lost in translation, then stick around and explain it to her.

This is incentive to go fast so the women can't confirm hotness or lack thereof with said cyclist(s)!

First off, how old was she? Assuming over 18, you should have offered to introduce her to the sport. She was, without a doubt, hitting on you! Shop there more often!

I went home to Louisiana a few weeks ago and since I was picking up a hardtail in the states I brought my lycra. I had to go into a few stores on the way back from a ride and everyone looked at me weirdly. I remembered seeing cyclists when I was a kid so I asked my sister, "so what's up? Poeple back home don't know what biking shorts are these days?"
She slowly replied, "...Only poor people ride bikes now, everyone else uses a car..."

It would have taken every inch of my power to not sarcastically say, "Why do you ask Princess Obvious; because of the shorts, jersey and helmet or the bike outside?" Sarcasm turns the chicks on man. Just ask my wife of 18-years She thinks I'm a real hoot!

By the by... were you wearing the helmet in the store?

That's so true. Not to long ago I posted about a carful of young girls yelling "sexy butt" and "nice legs" and a loud wolf whistle at me as I stood on the peddles from a light. The funny thing is I have grandchildren older than those girls. If they only knew. It was great fun for both them and me.
