More newb tire questions.

These are the 2 tires choices I've narrowed it down to. Any reason to buy one or the other?

What I need...
1. 27 x 1 1/4
2. Puncture resistant
4. Good on rough pavement and occasional short gravel patches
3. Fast and efficient

I don't have much to compare to. My bike came with Vittoria Zafirro 700x25. I switched to Schwalbe Marathon 28s after a couple of months. The Vittoria tires felt fast, but I got rattled on every little bump and they about killed me in a short gravel patch. The Marathons feel very comfortable and confident on the rough stuff, on a long flat stretch though they do not feel as fast or efficient. That is my around town bike, so that's okay.

I'm building up another bike for highway riding. It currently has Specialized Touring tires on it and they feel flippin' fantastic, but the side walls are deteriorating and they need replaced. The tires are smooth, quiet, fast, and super comfortable. Part of that may be the 531 frame, what do I know (not much)? Anyway, I don't want to go with something like the Marathons for this bike. I want puncture resistant and comfortable, but I still want a fast feeling tire.

I'm using 27 inch wheels, so my choices are limited. Everyone seems to love the Pasela PT. Does anyone have experience with the Conti Super Sport Plus? They also both are in that $30 range, but if someone could convince me that I need to spend more I just might do it. I'm not going on any world tours any time soon. Right now I'm looking at 20 miles rides, working up to 60 miles in the next month, with a potential 200-300 mile trip in late fall.

I've had good luck with 27 x 1-1/4" Paselas, and they can be had with a puncture resistant belt.

If you want to go wider, there's the SwiftTire "Sand Canyon" 27 x 1-3/8" tire, but I haven't personally used it:

I'm running micheline protek 27 x 1 and 1/4 tires on my commuter (a Sekine SHS 271) which measure out to 1 and 3/8 on my rim. It weighs 650 grams but I'm reasonably indifferent to weight when it comes to a commuter tire. Good tough tire but heavier than I'd like for a bike I ride to train on.

The folding pasela protite 27 x 1 and 1/4 weights 350 grams.

The continental super sport 27 x 1 and 1/4 plus weighs 640 grams.

My vote goes for the pasela.

Another tire I just found is the Continental Grand Sport Race. In 27 x 1 1/4 it's weight is down closer to the Pasela. Anyone here have any experience with this tire?

I have been using Continental Ultra Sport for about 15 years, 700 x 28 and 27" x 1-1/8" for my older bikes. Very light and fast tires, both measure about 25mm wide. I just bought a Ultra Sport ll, 27 x 1-1/8 but it is much wider than the older Ultra Sports, it's a little over 30mm wide.

I also just bought a pair of Super Sport Plus, 27 x 1-1/8 because i wanted to try a tire with more puncture resistance. These are considerably stiffer with more meat in the tread. They are just over 25mm wide which is perfect for me. I'm going to take them for a spin soon.

I am a big fan of Paselas. No, not on my "good" bikes. There I pay twice as much for rubber. But for a good allaround trouble-free ride, they are a good bet. There are tires that do better at any aspect you want to look at but Paselas don't perform poorly at much of anything (within reason).

I wouldn't pick Paselas as rain tires but they are not treacherous in the wet. Not bullteproof but they pick up little road debris so they don not get a lot of flats. Sidewalls are thin! so be aware, Brake shoes touching them will kill them fast! So will encounters with curbs, rubbing on the forks and stays, etc, They are the secret to the tires sweet ride so that drawback is pretty easy for al ot of us to deal with.

My experience with Continental has been only a few tires years ago and never a good experience so I am no use there, By contrast, I have an easy 50,000 miles on Paselas.
