Hi,

Trying to sell a bike that I built up where the frame is just too big for me. Where should I post regarding input on valuation? Like what does everybody think is a fair price? Thanks.

Oh .... Bicycle value. Price varies by market. Bicycle Blue Book will give you a lowball figure. CraigsList will show you the local market. How much you want can also depend on how long you are willing to wait to sell it.

As a rule. bikes lose a huge chunk of value as soon as the tires touch pavement post-sale, so if you paid $2000, expect half.

For a home-built bike, expect less, because even though the parts were good when you bought them, he buyer doesn't know what you might have damaged during assembly.

Another option might be to describe the bike in a post on a bicycle-oriented website, explain how much you have invested and suggest what you might be hoping for, and see if anyone responds.

Another option would be to find out what size frame you need.

Bear in mind, if it's a stock model or frame that you just happened to build up with your preferred components, wheels, etc, then market value will be determined by the value of the stock build, irrespective of how much you "upgraded" it. It will be easier to get the higher end resale value, but not more. If there were enough other people out there to constitute a market for what you built, you wouldn't have had to do it yourself.

You can search Ebay's "Completed listings" for similar bikes that sold.
If you "custom" built it, it will be harder to price, but may at least get you in the ballpark.

Ha! I bought the frame off craigslist probably 7 years ago, it is a Cannondale silk road. The reason I grabbed it was I had a bout with nostalgia and my first real mountain bike, a Cannondale Super V 500 from the same era, and I wanted to start road biking. I provided the serial number on the bottom bracket to the guys over at vintage cannondale and they thought it was a crash replacement frame made in 1997, but with a 1999 paint job. I haven't seen the paint scheme on any other bike.

About 3 years ago I finally decided to put some parts on this frame. I put a Shimano 105 (5700) groupset on it, richey pro biomax bar, thomson elite seat post, a selle italia man seat, and FSA wheels.

It is a 62cm frame, and I'm 6'. It is a bit big, as the hoods/bar angle suggests. Regardless, I haven't gotten into road biking and two kids later I'm more interested in finding a bike that is more comfortable for riding around with the family.

So the bike is "worth" about a thousand but you will likely only get half that in most markets.

I was going to say I threw about $900 worth of parts on it. Think I paid $200 for the frame. Guess I need to find someone like me, a sucker for late 90's Cannondale stuff.

Agree. If you find someone who really likes/wants that, you should get most/all of your investment back. But if you are in a hurry to liquidate it, you won't.
