Raleigh Super Course
The bike looks very nice, but this crankset just doesn't look like it belongs on a vintage bike. Kinda cheap looking. But I know zero about it....

That's the crankset they came with. The frame punches above it's weight.

Thanks for the replies. The bike looks really nice, thinking of calling the OP that has it and riding it home. It's a 1973, hez asking 300 for it.

Standard chrome cottered steel Stronglight, 10,000's of them have gone Bzillions of miles for decades, very oldschool status quo and plenty cool in a crude sort of way.

There have been discussions on the forum and the sentiment is that though the SC's have straight gauge 531 vs. butted and weigh more, they feel lively and not heavy when ridden. I have two myself and I agree with that, they're great bikes.

$300 for a Super Course? Whoa. Pricey. Later in the 70's this was the Super Course. Cotterless crank, 700c wheels, barend shifters. Thought this was a fair deal at $140. I added the saddle. Also replaced the hideous SunTour rear derailleur with a Simplex.

I had a brown Super Course with that same crank. In the hills of the Bay Area, the thing flexed like a hula dancer. Had to replace with 600EX crank. Fixed most of the flex issue. Certainly a great riding bike.

The asking price does seem high, but the Super Courses have a big following. And there really is nothing wrong with a steel cottered crank. They are durable and dependable, if not as light as modern cranks. After all, they had been used for decades, in racing as well as everyday riding.

Oh absolutely, not paying that. It's a CL find and been for sale for a while. Just looks like a sweet bike to try to pick up. And it's my size...

Oh! and look carefully at the FD, the Simplex FD plastic attachment often breaks.

They look like Nervex lugs to me, not Capella. Capella have round protrusions with a hole in it (look at the diag tube on the brown one). The green one has no round protrusions and I believe these are Nervex lugs.
As per this guy (https://www.sheldonbrown.com/retrora...percourse.html) 73 and 74 had Capella lugs and before they had Nervex. Are you sure of the year?

It’s a ‘72. First year with simplex Prestige derailleurs last year with nervex professional lugs. Another giveaway is the “super course “ script on top tube that I see peeking out from one pic. From the pictures the bike is all original (even handlebar tape, cable housings, pedals, toe clips). It also looks to be in very good shape.

More detailed photos of the components could help to determine the model year. Also, look for a serial number on the rear drop out - non drive side. With this number and photos, we could possibly find the model year.

I agree, this is a bike that looks to be in great shape. Components and decals tend to confirm it is a 1972. Parts all look original (rare to see original handlebar tape from 1972!!) except maybe for the saddle. Original saddle was a Brooks B15 and I am not sure this is a B15. Usually, the Brooks nameplate is riveted to the back of the saddle, not attached under like this one. But I am being picky here, the bike looks great.
