I really like this one.

What I like about it is that it's very practical. The traffic situation was that they had to seperate cyclists and motorists vertically to keep the flow going. Tunneling can be quite complicated depending on the soil, construction is usually very disruptive to traffic and bicycle tunnels aren't very good for the sense of safety at night. Because they lifted the cycle lane instead of the cars, it could be a lightweight construction that was much cheaper. It stayed well within budget and was finished on time, while it looks as a prestige project which usually don't stay within budget and time.

Only about 70 km Norh of MAK's. It's the Hovenring in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

It's pretty, and a nice piece of engineering with the whole maypole thing, but a very expensive way to achieve the same thing we have all over my town.

The easiest way to achieve a MUP roundabout tiered with a road junction is to put hills between the legs of one and join them together with bridges.

The road is actually the upper deck for most of ours, lined with bushes, to remove them from the whole pedestrian/cycling experience and give better the feeling there are no roads.

I really need to go around and get some photos that reflect their design well.

A bike overpass has to gain enough elevation to clear motor vehicle traffic (large trucks); a bike underpass only has to lose enough elevation to clear a tall person seated on a bike.

Besides the fact that Dutch cities are competing with infrastructure to portray themselves as cycling friendly, Eindhoven and surroundings considers itself the silicon valley of the Netherlands. It's booming and growing fast, this is also the connection to a whole new urban area in development and there are short on landmarks anyway. So I guess just shoveling earth was beneath them, or at least beneath the image the city wants.

But to be fair to them, 11 million euro's is not a lot of money when it comes to infrastructure. A simple single bicycle tunnel that meets some instable soil easily exceeds that number and it's dwarfed by car or train infrastucture.

I've seen images and videos of the Hovenring with cyclists turning both left and right and circulating both clockwise and counterclockwise. Perhaps due to slow speeds and light usage, this works after a fashion but it creates a lot of crossing paths.
