So, I'm mulling the option of converting two older bikes to a modern shifting system using the often touted "ShimErgo" combination of Ergopower levers and Shimano cassettes and dérailleurs.

In the first case, it will be using 10 speed shifters with an 8 speed cluster, according to most reports this should be fairly straightforward, for the back, but the front may be a little harder because it will be a triple, from what I'm reading, I may have to soften the return spring somewhat.

In the second case, I'm going to be putting 8 cogs from a 9 speed cassette on a 7 speed hub, as described by Sheldon. This is because the frame is bonded and cold setting is NOT recommended. For this to work I need to use the alternate cable clamping a described by the hubub mod.

Comments on either of these are welcome.

One question about Ergopower levers, I have to admit, I've never used them, am I right in thinking that the brake lever is independent of the shift lever behind it? that is, it doesn't pivot sideways as does an STI lever? And the "return" action is provided by a paddle/button on the inside face?

Thanks, thought so. That's another reason to go this route, that pivoting brake lever often bugged me.

Also, the chain moves in the same direct as the lever or thumb paddle.
