KMC X10sl gold w/master link. I believe KMC makes Shimano's chains.

Shimano. Even if it cost more. Much more reliable.
Master link is overrated. You don't need it, and it is weak point (my chain broke on it (and yes, it was perfectly connected), so is my friend's)). Never again.

I've been using Wipperman Connex for years, with no problems. Just another option.

I had 2 shimano's before trying the kmc, the kmc is noticeably quieter and seems to last just a little longer. I won't look back to shimano and will stick with kmc.

I'll use Shimano chains if the price is right for the same spec as the KMC. But I won't use the dinky little rivet; the master link always wins.

Cheaper, quieter, easier to install? No thanks, I'll keep using Shimano.
(Just kidding. I'm KMC all the way now.)

Used KMC for years. To me it seemed like they wore out faster.
Then I switched to shimano with a wipperman connex link. But I found that I was rarely removing the chain.
Recently I just switched back to your basic shimano chain.

Eh. Currently using HG73 chains I get off a big auction site for $17 a pop. They seem to last a while (5000 miles?) and are quiet. Going to try a X9.93 chain next, to see if shifting changes at all, but I'm perfectly happy with the HG73.
Definitely use a master link though. I've been using a Wipperman Connex link with my chain and no problems, also very easy to remove.

I replaced a chain on one of my previous bikes. There was no need for special dinky rivets or links. I bought a chain breaker tool for about $3, pressed out one of the pins, took off the old chain, put on the new chain and pressed in the new pin with my tool. So has anything changed? I'll need to replace my current chain in a year or two. Can I use the same simple procedure or has somebody made things complicated?

Whipperman - quieter, wears better, superior quicklink
kmc - see t'other's posts, above
SRAM or Shimano - 3rd, way
Shimono - I'd go with a more well known fourth brand

Shimono, or Chimpmono. Maybe even Shinmono, but it might leave a bruise.
