we've been pretty lucky down here in san diego county regarding fires/air quality so far. midday>late afternnon heat still a thing once you get more than a mile
from the bays or ocean.
the coast has stayed in the mid-70's to very low 80's and riding along it at 15-20 mph, there is enough cooling to keep your personal radiator from overheating.

Latigo Canyon climb. Had a pinch flat on PCH which made the ride less fun cause the sun started to be much for me later on the ride.

a 46-miler taking advantage of a cooler (but still muggy) light fog layer along the coast in san diego. rode over to point loma
and dropped down to ocean beach to hit the pizza port there and complete the slice o' pepperoni + ipa tandem x 2 lunch ride
achievement. then northbound through pacific beach and up mt. soledad, followed by a plunge down to mission bay and back
to my main mesa.

A little over 40 miles. Conejo Valley to Calabasas, Cardiac and up Stunt. Over to Piuma and descending the five miles to the crossover.
Nice fog layer by the beach kept temps very comfy for a change. Seemed like a lot of groups on the road today. About 30% of riders wearing masks.

Rode from Dana Point to Mission Bay (San Diego). Finally got a chance to use my DBID to go through Pendleton. I always enjoy this ride because there are sections where the land hasn't been changed. Even though your are only a few miles from civilization there are times when you feel you are in the middle of no where. I also like seeing the 'Tank XING' signs. Puts you right back into reality.

BTW, the Base web site that says they are not issuing new IDs is wrong, per the sentry at the gate. You can get them at the visitor's center at the Oceanside gate.

meant to investigate 2-3x this month with my pendleton id expiring last week of july. some websites are more accurate/timely than others.
made it up to carlsbad several times in august but didn't have enough time to ride to the southern entrance of the base and personally inquire.
will try to do so wed.

Was off the bike for two weeks due to inflamed metatarsal pads and an arthritic left knee. Glad to be back on the bike after some rehab and getting a pair of insoles with a proper arch and metatarsal pads built in. Made a huge difference in comfort. Completed 74 miles and 4.6K of climb around the SGV.

55-spot to start the month off. met up with fellow socal forumite Tycho Brahe at pioneer park in azusa to complete a comedy-filled pre-ride and during ride scenario. ascended hwy 39, veering left at the east fork/39 junction and did the cogswell dam road spur (aka west fork rd...aka devils canyon dam rd...aka forest road 2n25). 8 miles in. 8 miles out.
gorgeous for the vast majority of it. last .5 mile steeply up to road’s end takes you out of the scenery. rejoined the 39, hung a left onto east fork and went up the first spur road on the left/north side of the road up to the shooting range. made it nearly all the way up (fairly steep) but the last ramp dissuaded us...for now. a little soak in east fork, then up gmr to the grr/gmr junction. a right uphill, then downhill past the shack and to the base of gmr, then west along sierra madre blvd back to the start.

rear der issues resulting in loss of the easiest (34) climbing gear, not enough drinking water (ride was a continual recitation of coleridge’s rime of the ancient mariner-“water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink”)
and under inflated tires added to the hijinks. late 9:15am start meant that all the smart kids were exiting the mtns when we started.

pavement decent the whole way. cogswell dam spur road pavé better than expected, paved the entire way and a highly-recommended side trip. if you need to step out of the office
to "make a personal call" while riding on cogswell dam rd...be very aware there is an absolute ton of poison oak on the north side of the road (and some on the south side as well).
there is a good size clearing near road's end just before the road bucks upwards that is better for that kinda stuff.

Did 7 repeats east/west on and around Turnbull Cyn. Just one mulie deer today but perfect morning before the heat comes back for the weekend. 111F forecasted for Sat/Sun. About two dozen riders out this morning. 42 miles and 5500 feet of climb for my effort. Better yet, no new knee pain, I wore 2XU compression knickers for better circulation around the knees.

I have thermal long sleeve compression tops and thermal tights. These are for cold mornings under 40F and you will heat up quick so they are better for cold morning hikes. I have 2XU singlets and tanks top (both compression) that I wear as a base layers. They breathe and work well for most riding in SoCal.

I also have a 2XU 180 wind jacket that is high quality and works great to allow the heat to escape so I do not become a bucket of sweat. Form fitting and probably my best piece of cycling attire I own.

I wear the 3/4 knickers over my Black Bibs and that is great support for my knees and I do not fatigue as quickly with the added compression. 2XU makes quality stuff. I have watched for sales on ebay and scored the knickers at about half of retail.

^^^^^ Negative on the bibs/shorts. I am still looking for affordable ($100 range) non-thermal bib knickers with similar compression as 2XU.

Slow, random 22 miles around Agoura and Westlake Village. Started at 7:15 and home by 9:00, nearly finished a full water bottle in just that short time. Wasn't in any hurry so really just lumbered around. Only hill was Westlake Blvd climb from Los Arboles to Kanan.

Ack. Only rode 18 miles and didn't even leave Carlsbad. Got an early start, but still didn't beat the heat or the holiday traffic. PCH was a madhouse of texting drivers darting for parking spots at the beach. I read a month ago about the health benefits of "heat stress", but right now the only benefit I can discern is that it feels good to not be pedaling uphill when it's 110 degrees. It's so hot birds are grenading in mid-air and nuns are swearing openly in the street.

started near the Bass Pro shop parking lot in Rancho Cucamonga, Ca, climbed to Baldy lodge via campus, shinn road, baldy road and back!

I was a bit uneasy riding during the early hours climbing the secluded back roads up the mountain.

Thought we could get in a ride before the heat. Started at 6:30 off scripps poway near the 67, bombed down scripps and climbed southend of pomerado and rode toward Kearney villa and then to genesis. In la jolla, made our way to Torrey pines, weather low 90s, full tank looking great. As soon as we went away from the coast to the 56 pathway, it was another planet. It was so hot my eyes were sweating then it would dry up with a blast of 110 degree wind. The last 9 miles were brutal, headaches, buzzing noises in my head, could not concentrate, making bad decisions just pure misery and very dangerous. I'll never do that again, but I was so eager to ride my new build bike I ignored all the dangers associated with heat exhaustion, never again. Stay safe folks.

^^^^ Only forecasted to be 95F today but smoke clouds overhead and ash on the cars. This royally sucks a$$. Walked my dog only one mile and my eyes started to itch then burn. Oh well, guess some core work is in order. Don't chance your health for a ****ty bike ride.

Got up at 6AM to go for an early morning ride before the holiday crowds get out there. First thing I did was walk outside and look at my car's windshield - little flakes of white ash all over it, so no riding today. A Santa Ana wind event is supposed to start tonight and go through tomorrow, so it looks like the bicycles will be parked for a few days.

And something even worse than wildfire ash: The young adults renting the house about 5 doors down from me had a good sized party yesterday afternoon/evening. Had a big rental party tent out front that covered almost the entire front yard, even two porta-potties in the driveway! About 30 extra cars parked in the street. Really stupid idea in these times of COVID-19.

Just an FYI: Angeles National Forest is being shutdown completely beginning today until Sept 14 per USFS. In So Cal the San Bernardino Natl Forest and Cleveland Natl Forest are also closed until Sept 14 per the USFS.

thank you for the post for us "socallers." looks like the state highways are still open such as the 138, 173, 330 or 18 in the san berdoos, the 243 and 74 near idyllwild. the 33 near ojai. the 78 and 79
through the san diego backcountry, ach/ca hwy 2 currently closed for nearly the entire western half due to a fire but it appears to be open on the wrightwood>dawson saddle end. the 39 affected on the upper part. the 38 a closure much lower down
