Mechanical disc brake adjustment

Hi!
Have a strange problem with Hayes MX2.
I swiped out the fork and so I had to install new adapter, since the old fork had IS, and new one has Post mount.
Brakes is from 2004 model bike so they have some mileage, as the rest of the bike...

When I fully tighten brake mount screws (after getting it in position on the disc), brake pad just sticks to the rotor and doesn't retract.
After turning one of the mounting screws back a bit, pad snaps back in to the place...
Note: when slightly loose everything works, and I'm not talking super loose when everything moves around...

Is there a lip on the pad which is catching on the edge of the disc? If so, file off the lip or replace the pads.

does the caliper twist when you tighten the bolt? I usually bolt down and center the caliper by gradually tightening each bolt a little bit at a time, alternating them until they are torqued correctly.

No, can't see a lip being an issue.
Maybe a small extra washer on the mounting screws would do?

It still should not lock the pad on the rotor in this case.

I hold the brake on the disc , pulling the brake lever loosen and re tighten the mounting bolt ..
maybe back off the pad adjustment fixed pad is close but not touching. adjusted as it wears

Moving pad there is a wear adjustment you must do as that pad wears..

One possible explanation is the fork mounts are not well surfaces/aligned and the caliper is getting twisted when tightened down. What happens if you remove the wheel and test pull the lever? Does the pad still stay extended or will it retract? Andy

Single sided brakes do weird things to discs, wearing them to a taper with time. I suspect your problems are to do with this interacting with the change from IS to post mount and maybe the taper messing with the magnetic pad holder, it could be enough taper to tilt the pad off the magnet?. I assume you still have the domed and concave washers in the set up so you could try clamping the pads tight against the discs with the adjusters, then tighten the bolts which will twist the caliper to the best angle for the fixed pad, then back off the adjusters. Next step, maybe a new disc?

As suggested the mounting surfaces may not be done accurately .. there is a bike shop tool to re face those mounts..

Problem soveld:
It was actually a brake pad lip (when fully tighten the brake mounts, it would slightly touch the brake mount adapter!).
File down that thing a bit and there we ride away

Thanks for all your replies guys!
