Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A shot of Haldol usually works. I don’t know why. That, or Thorazine.

The way I heard it was a muscle relaxant to the diaphragm, but that was decades ago and I have no idea if either of the above is that. That was after 24 hours as I hear the story (he was a Yankee farmer and wouldn't go to the doctor unless absolutely necessary). I've had it for a few hours before, from dinner through exactly bedtime (I had despaired of sleep but they disappeared the moment I laid down, which has never worked since). That time it had gotten physically painful, and so frequent it made breathing a chore.

Stupid little thing to cause that much issue.

Ugh. The only times I’ve done that have been in brain tumor patients and the like, who were hiccuping for days. Not something I’d use in someone with self-limited attacks.

Agree it’s a last-resort measure. You could also try some Valium.

If you were shipwrecked on a deserted isle, sans any of your products, would you still be awesome?

Not ringing a bell. People have had some success with botulinum toxin, but a weak diaphragm is slow. All the drug treatments are for truly intractable cases.

Sorry.

When I was a kid, my mom once tried to scare me out of an attack. She succeeded in scaring the living dog**** out of me by suddenly screaming my name from the next room and the hiccups kept on coming.

As I recall when I was a ute I took honey for hiccups. No one was scared.

What works for me sometimes is drinking water with both hands raised above my head, arms straight up. Mrs John has to help with this.

I find the term ute for a young person highly amusing. here ute means a light truck like a Ford Ranger, Toyota Hilux or the old Holden Commodore Ute (a modified saloon car with a tray instead of rear seats and boot). Every time I see when I was a ute my brain automatically thinks that you are comparing yourself to a light commercial vehicle.
