Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

For the record, I'm in a way better mood today. I can see a little better/brighter and don't have an aching orb to put me in a funk. I got a good ride in with friends who are like nannies at intersections to make sure I don't get run over from cars approaching from the left. I've had too many close calls lately, I guess.

Anyway, great day for a relaxing group ride.

Off to mow my single contiguous lawn.

This was my first long cycling or running hiatus with real fitness numbers. It's pretty ugly on paper and my HR/power is definitely up, but I don't seem to feel that bad.

So, it's a hard rain a-gonna fall?

I pulled out my full-size frame pump, flipped up the thumb-lock like a hook, and extended it to its full length. Got the thumb lock underneath at about mid-snake, lifted it up and gently tossed it into the bushes about 5 feet from the path, all from pump-length away.
I haven't seen any rattlers for a few weeks now but I haven't been mountain biking much. Earlier this year I saw them often.
When I lived in the canyon we had rattlers and other snakes in the yard. My landlord lived next door and we shared the driveway. One day he saw a snake under his van and got his pistol and started shooting at it, eventually killing it. The echo of the gunfire in the small canyon was incredible.

My cat killed 2 snakes and left them in pieces at the door. One day a small snake bit him on his nose and he screamed until it let go and slithered away. He still has a scar from that. There was a dead rattler in the driveway that had been run over and he started to go after it and I yelled at him and he stopped. I buried it where I buried all of the animal parts he left at the door.

I don't know who needs to see this, but here's a video on air masses and fronts.

I am so glad there are no land snakes, venomous or not, here. Here the only things that may kill you in the bush are: falling off something, drowning attempting to cross a river, and Onga Onga (native stinging nettle).

Here is part of the yard in snakeland with a truck I used to have and the Gunnar. It wouldn't stay green once it warmed up.

I left just after 7:00 this morning and got a nice climbing ride done before it got too hot. Old pic of one of the climbs.

This is from the top of that climb. Where the 2 mountains intersect in the top of the picture is where the road reaches the top of the previous, bigger climb. The road going up to the left was not climbed today.

I am envious of that. I still haven't cut my back lawn but it doesn't need it yet. It is starting to go dormant. One advantage to the season of death.

Did St. Patrick drive out all the snakes where you live?

My wife and I did a cycling tour in Mallorca in 2001 and the island is basically bug free. There are no screens on the windows anywhere. Don't know about snakes, though.

There's nothing good about the season of death. Football used to be kind of redeeming, but it's dumb now.

Now that you mention it, I can see why you're crestfallen. Losing the ability to marvel at the Mighty KSU Owls from afar is a gut punch

the Yankees have 600 million tied up in salaries for Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton. 2 players! The Pirates won't spend that over the next 6 years for their entire team.
