Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Embarassing and sensitive question

I apologize if this has been asked a thousand times, didn't really know what to search. I ask that if you are sensitive to a male anatomy question that you please do not read on.

Today I went on my first group ride since being back on the bike. I noticed about half way though the ride that my penis had drawn way up, like jumped in cold water ++ kind of drawn up. I have not had this happen to me before, not when riding before (last year) or since being back to riding this time for the last two months-ish.

Is this indicative of a problem with the seat? Anything I should be concerned about, or a normal thing when riding harder than "normal"?

I had the same problem when riding on a Fizik Arione. I switched over to the Arione Versus which has the center channel, but I didn't remember to check if this was still happening. The reason that I made the switch was due to the numbness I was experiencing. I'll definitely check for this other issue the next time I come back from a ride.

thank you for asking this question! this happens to me fairly often. When I used to mountain bike it would be about 50% of the time. Now that I have been using the road bike more, it happens more often. It's as if my penis almost becomes inverted. so much so that I have to stick my hands down my pants and pull it back to normal. no problems after that. Is this nerves or blood circulation issues? Dehydration? why is this happening? I am a pretty normal sized+ guy if you know what I mean....

shrinkage happens, but I'm not sure about it inverting up into you. last winter I went out on a ride and it was cold as hell (like 25F) and all I had at the time was regular shorts and leg warmers. went on a 20 mile ride. got home, walked into the bathroom to take a shower and was getting undressed. pulled my bibs down and my wife walked in and she laughed and pointed and was like, "OMG WHAT HAPPENED TO IT!!??" I chuckled and told her to get the F out! lol

Forgive me, but I'm about to buy my first road bike, and this thread is a little frightening! Is this really common? Is anyone worried about long term damage from the numbness?

Thanks much for all the replies as well as the humor keeping things light. The couple of folks mentioning the seat gives me consideration to check that out. This was the longest ride I have done on the new seat (bike).

Get out of your saddle for about 30 seconds every 5 minutes or so.

Fixes the problem...

When I first started cycling I had all sorts of discomfort and numbness there. I found that raising the saddle gave me more power at the pedals but more grief in the wedding vegetables. So I tipped the nose of the saddle down slightly and slid it forward and everything was fine.

Numbness? Not normal. See a fitter, get a better saddle, look for some solutions online... don't just put up with it. This can do long term damage, but is fixable if you look for some help.

Shrinkage? Not normally related. This is more of a reaction of the sympathetic/parasympathetic nervous system to make as much oxygen available to your muscles as possible as you stress your body. Any non-essential parts to the task at hand get restricted blood flow (digestive system, reproductive system, etc.). This happens to all endurance athletes, and I wouldn't be too concerned about it (unless you happen to be riding with some ladies you are trying impress...)
