Tdf new danger - selfies

It's tough enough that the riders have to negotiate spectators on the route, but now you have people turning their back to the cyclists trying to get their selfies with 200 cyclists racing towards them. What a crazy mix of vanity and stupidity just to get a picture of yourself in front of the approaching pack. Unfortunately, rather than hitting the spectator, the cyclist will often squeeze into the pack, sometimes taking someone down in the process.

I suggest a snowplow be the lead vehicle.

During the coverage yesterday, when the crowed was crushing the lane down to 5 or 6 feet across, one of the riders reached out and swatted an iPhone out of a spectators hand. I was like YES! NICE MOVE!

I hate to admit I've texted and ridden before. Several times. Only when I feel it's safe though. Yes, I realize, it's really stupid. Anyone else admit to this?

I'll admit to that. Texting, making/answering calls, asking siri for directions, but that's about it. Browsing bikeforums.net should be my next "level up". :-)

During my last two rides over the Brooklyn Bridge I saw riders doing exactly this...pedaling away, holding up their phone, trying to snap a shot, and completely oblivious of what was right in front of them...

I would love to just check folks like that off their bikes...just a fantasy.

I've only followed pro cycling for a few years, but I am still amazed at the total lack of crowd control. Very dangerous for both athlete and spectator.

Not for fans with common sense. They'll be fine.

I've seen fans trip and fall while running alongside cyclists. I've seen a couple get run over by motorcycles. Then there's the time Lance got his bars hooked in a spectator's bag. He took the blame for that one. Thor Hushovd got whacked by a giant hand, nasty cut with 190bpm heartrate equals a lot of blood.

And of course, the errant dog that tacoed Marcus Burghardt's wheel. The dog was fine, Burghardt won the stage; I believe the dog's owner had to pay a fine.

The tv camera makes the fans on the mountain roads appear a lot closer than they are. I do wish they'd give the riders a bit more space, though. But I don't want there to be barricades all over the place like in Beijing.

Having the motorcycles plowing through the hordes works pretty well. And the gendarmes don't hesitate to take unruly fans "out back for a little chat".

It always amazes me when you can't even see the road ahead of the riders with everyone crowding in and hanging signs right in front of the riders. This is one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world, and there is very little crowd control. I keep waiting for some psychopath to attack a rider. My favorite was when Contador punched the dude who was running beside him a couple years ago. The car that took out the entire breakaway two years ago will go down as one of the most bizarre events in sports history.

If you think these people are crazy, don't watch any old rallying vids.
