Chain reconnect help

i broke the chain on a Peugeot UO10 to replace a failed FD and to clean the RD. I bought a missing link to reconnect it. The link measures that it will fit the chain width. The chain plates are too large and I can’t get links close enough together to get the missing link started. The links seem plenty beefy and I’m tempted to sand each link a little to get the links close enough together to get the missing link started.

im kinda stuck until I figure this out. This long chainstay frame is a short term experiment for me and I’ll likely eventually spring for stuff to get lower gears or another long chainstay frame. My disclaimer is I’m new at wrenching on bikes and I got this bike mostly to get to wrench on it.

Any advice on reconnecting the chain? I lost one of the pins I pushed out.

Thanks.

It's probably an older, different made chain.
Buy a new chain.

I went to the LBS and we used the chain and measured it to get the correct missing link but we didn’t check further. The mechanic mentioned the unfamiliar look of the chain when he measured it. I’ll buy a new chain. Thanks.

KMC. The LBS guy mentioned he didn’t recognize the chain when he measured it for the link. I may sand the links so I can get things back together and buy a new chain to finish up. Thanks.

Pushing chain pins back in chains is old 20th century stuff now relegated to single speed bikes..

join 2 inner links with a quick link .. if you bought a new derailleur chain, they come with 1 quick link.

Sounds like you got the wrong quick link, you should never sand or file links down, you are just weakening them.

BTW if you pushed out the rivet entirely, you will have a hell of a time trying to get it back in, when I break a chain, I only push the rivet just enough to separate the links and is makes reconnecting so much easier when it stays in one of the plates of the link with just enough protruding to line it back up.

Here is you tube video showing the details of reusing the rivet and also other methods to reconnect the chain.

Did you get a link that's too narrow for the chain ?
For example, a 10 speed link, and 7 speed chain ?

How many cogs on the rear cassette/freewheel ??

Poke a finish nail through the holes and bend it over-now that's old school!

Find a new shop, hopefully one with someone who has been around enough to have some C&V experience. I suspect he measured the total width not the inner width where your sprocket has to fit, you probably needed a 3/32" (0.094" or 2.30mm).

you stop pushing the pin out just to where it is retained in the outer link , but still holding the chain together ,
until you flex the chain sideways..

if you pushed the pin all the way out, you did it wrong. now on don't do that again ..

got a saved link section of the same chain?
