This was $65 on CL. Painted frame hides most identifiers but there is a S on the top of the seat stay. The badge doesn't look familiar. The FD and RD look newer and the wheels look like Tourney hubs with 700 mm wheels with drilled out valve holes.
What is this and how do you close up the valve holes to presa size?

I think it's a Panasonic something or other. See this headbadge from Velobase:


It's the right shape, and has a serial # or datecode stamped in the lower left hand side, same as the mystery bike.

I think you nailed it.

They make adapters so you can run Presta tubes in wheels drilled for Schrader valves.

I just use a washer a little bigger than the presta and use the screw on the presta tube to hold the washer in place. It works fine.

I remember a long time back that stay cap engraving (on a similar mystery frame) really threw a lot of us on a goose-chase since it looks like a stylized "S" and not so much like 2 "P"s. But the headbadge is a unrefutable clue!

Pedal that I can see in the one pic looks like some kind of Atom (Atomic?) pedal, maybe one with the 3-digit model number (500, 600 etc,)

Thanks guys. You all really helped a lot. The bike has a triple crank and I tried looking at Panasonic touring bikes but it doesn't seem to be in that high a range. The crank is a rivited Shimano bio pace that seems to be steel. So far I can't place the model. The serial # is 2B12127 and the badge has 7101. It's nicer than the cheapies but not as nice as the high end touring bikes. This is the fun part.😁

OK. I think this must be a dx 4000 but what's with the triple crank? The adjusters on the rear dropouts indicate a high end model and the touring models all had cantilever brakes so this has got to be the dx4000 with a customer installed triple. Any thoughts?

When I first saw the photo I thought it might be something you had lifted from somewhere as a joke.

You might wish to consider posting it to the "before & after" thread.

Absence of eyelets on fork ends supports idea fork a replace-a-mente.

I still have a couple of these Tange Champion replacement forks in their shipping cartons...

Someone did a good deal of work on the machine to get it to the state in which you purchased it.
