I like breaking away but.....

Best bike movie of all time is "Bicycle Thieves".

Check it out!

In addition, those of you contemplating the best up to date winter bike, this is what got me to work on icy roads today

High tensil mixte with 3 speed hub, 3 chainrings, center pull brakes and studded snow tires. I love riding my bike!

For two decades my winter commuter was the same bike I used the rest of the year. 28mm tires, fenders, drop bars and heaven forbid, rim brakes! Cut through the snow and down to the pavement much better than the mountain bike. Felt safer and less prone to excessive exertion and crashing. Never liked icy roads, though. Still don't.

Oh I missed the 3x 3 speed. How do you usually shift? The back and then occasionally the front or vice versa?

I've never seen Breaking Away. Just felt like saying that.

I just read Road to Valor about Gino Bartali. Just felt like saying that too.

Neither The Bicycle Thief, an Italian film classic, nor Breaking Away, are specifically 'bicycle movies," whatever they may be. The former is about poverty and misfortune in war torn post war Italy, the latter about young adults trying to find themselves and their places in society. Good films, both of them, and the bicycle element in Breaking Away is an added bonus.

generally i shift the hub after finding the ring i like. The 2 bigger rings are half steps of the sturmey, the little one is a bailout.

i liked bicycle thieves for the simplicity of the lives that were led. A bicycle would make all the difference in ones life. Its powerful to me, especially when we help folks at the coop.

PLUS ONE. A perfect summary.

Thanks to the OP for the suggestion. It was available on Amazon and I watched it last night. Try Beijing Bicycle.

I guess perhaps my original statement was misleading, my sentiments are more akin to what jackb stated. It was a good movie, but the way it was described and held up around here, I went into it thinking it was a biking movie, when in reality it was a coming of age movie with biking fairly secondary to the other themes of the movie.
