Climbs
Does anyone know a convenient way to estimate the steepness of a climb (e.g., "6 percent grade", etc.)? I see this kind of reference occasionally, but I'm not sure what it means in terms of "felt" steepness or in relation to the kind of hills I'm used to. Is there some easy way to interpret this?

Do a search on inclinometer- there's a guy who posted instructions and a scale for making a crude one from a cassette tape box or CD jewel case. Should be easy to make and give you a rough idea of grade. Sorry, I don't remember where the post was, but I found it through Google, IIRC... it was basically a string with a weight inside the case, and a scale marked in % grade. You could cobble one up with a student protractor and measure the angle directly- the grade is the tangent of the angle, but the angles are pretty small (3 degrees is a 5% grade, if I'm figuring right)
