Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Red Cross vampires.....

Well the vamps at the ARC visited my office and relieved me of about a pint of blood. Is this gonna have any effect on my ride tommorrow?

A lot of factors...do you donate often? How much do you weigh? etc...

I'm just under 200 lbs., and I donate about as often as I can (O- blood, they beg me) and it doesn't bother me much. If circumstances allow me to ride the same day, I'll take a shorter (like 12-15 mile) ride, but generally don't have any problem the next day with my normal (32-33 mile) ride, although I don't push it hard.

Yes. You'll spend your whole ride tomorrow looking at your tires thinking they're flat.

This is why I donate platelets. You keep all your red blood cells, you get to watch a DVD, and you still get all the cookies and juice you want. You should look into it. I highly recommend it!

Dopper you dou this before a race and your hematocrit will be to the high side for a bit though blood volume corects itself quickly.

Quite the opposite. By removing whole blood, the hematocrit shouldn't change immediately because the cell/fluid ratio is still the same, but then your fluid volume comes up to compensate and your hematocrit actually should go down (= dilute blood). As your body replenishes the RBC's, then the hematocrit level will come back up to normal.
