Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New Bike Shop in NYC Grand Opening tonite

It's called Altheus it is at 113 Fourth Ave (Union Square) I stopped in before and they were still kind of putting the place together. They have a nice selection of High End Bikes, nothing low to mid end whatsoever. Some clothing, more of an eyecandy kind of place. They have a sweet Look TT bike and an impressive fitting center. It is very easy not to notice when ealking past it, it is in the same building that they are opening a crunch gym at and there are signs outside for Crunch Fitness. They have all the Orbea bikes, Serotta, Look, and a few other eandom things. Real nice bunch of guys, the grand opening is 6-11 tonight. There are giveaways, food and free stuff. There is also a new place i have never seen before called Jackrabbit on 14st between 6th and 7th. the website for Altheus is www.altheus.net

Sorry if it is a re-post.

I hope they straighten up their act in the new digs. I called their Westchester shop to confirm that they had a particular bike in stock. I was told that they did. I drove some distance with family to shop. I asked to see aforementioned bike only to be told that the "frameset" was in their NYC shop, which was not open yet. Okay. I asked for a price quote on a particular build. I gave him a quote that I received from another distant shop and explained that I would be willing pay a premium for service/labor provided by "local" shop. The manager then tells me that it's not worth his time to give me a quote because he could not sell me the groupset for the quote I previously received on the complete bike. I told him that I was not asking him to underbid, but merely wanted his best price and understood I would pay a premium to deal with a "local" shop. With this, the manger huffs and walks away.

I believe that Altheus is a larger, multi-sport coaching/training/retail business that rolled up smaller shops including High Caliper in Westchester, which was a great little place. I intend to ride around their parking lot on my new bike which I purchased for $800 less than Altheus' advertised price with a big sign on my back saying so.

It seems that they are marketing a lifestyle, not providing a great shopping experience, I wouldn't give this place a dime.

I walked by this shop a couple of weeks ago as they were putting things together. I saw that LOOK by the front window and had a lot of illegal thoughts race through my head. "Hmmm... How thick is this window?"

The place looks impressively stocked with LOOKs and ORBEAs, but I wonder how much business they will be able to generate in that part of town. Most bikes I see rolling by on 4th avenue are of the craigslist specials. Oh well, I hope they make it.

Hmm, just what NYC needs: another pretentious shop full of things I can't afford....

Their (ugly) website won't help them out at all. They'll need to do a bit better if they want to move those $5000.00 bikes... Even high end shops like Toga have templated sites that work off a standard backend, but they do work and look decent.

It is most definetly ONLY a shop to go looking, i cant imagine the prices on that stuff, nothing was marked when i was in there. Paragon does have by far the best apparel selection i have ever seen. right now they have 10% off all jerseys.

+1 more or less.

i like that i can go there and try stuff on without being hassled, then order off of the www for a better price. i have absolutely no problems doing that to them.
