open to other suggestions but that is about what is available locally for entry 29ers. I am 6'4" 205 ride about 150 miles a week on the road and looking to get into some off road riding.

Tell us where you're located, might be someone here that knows of some shops near or sort of near you with other brands.
Now, to the question at hand. I picked up a Fuji Tahoe Comp, 2009 can be had at well under $1K. Their 2010 stuff, which is now available, is pretty nice too. I fell in love with that bike very quickly, it's my new favorite mountain bike.

I like the Giant because of the 20mm thru axle fork. Also, I think it looks the best.
