Hey guys. I plan on upgrading my current Shimano 2300 shifters, FSA crankset, BB, and Sora rear derailleur on my Masi cause I'm doing my first triathlon in about three weeks. I plan on upgrading to SRAM Red shifters, SRAM Red crankset, GXP BB, and SRAM Force rear derailleur. With this my bike drops 1.23 lbs to 18.77 lbs.

I've got a few questions regarding this setup. First off, if I replace both crankset and BB, does it matter if it is a BB30 or GXP? Secondly, how does the Doubletap work?

You put SRAM Red on your bike without realizing how it works? The official SRAM "how it works" picture is here, but essentially, you tap the lever once (i.e., one click) to upshift and push it a bit farther (i.e., two clicks) to downshift.

GXP / BB30 are two different bottom bracket standards. You need to know which one your bike has and order the same type when you get your Red group.
GXP-type bearings are in cups that screw into your bottom bracket...BB30's bearings press in.
If you have a BB30 bike and want to use GXP, there are adapters available (not the other way around; BB30's spindle is wider)
This is the difference (GXP on the top, BB30 on the bottom)


Doubletap controls all the shifting with one lever, unlike your Shimano group (where the brake lever controls upshifts).
On a SRAM bike, you press the Doubletap lever until you hear a click.
if you release it after the first click, you'll go down a cog.
if you keep pushing until the second (or third, or fourth) click, you'll go up that many cogs.
That's all there is

You would get more bang for your buck on some nice wheels? You could easily shed 1.5 lbs for $600

+1 on the wheels. If you are looking to do such a big upgrade, you may find it cheaper to just buy a complete bike with Red installed.

Looking at the weight drop you have listed, it indicates that your current bike is a budget one, and putting Red on it won't make it significantly lighter for the amount of money you will be putting into it to go to Red.

That will have no measureable effect on your tri performance (unless a lighter wallet makes one go faster, but that's never worked for me).

It's a bad idea to make major changes to your bike right before an important event. You already have enough to worry about. Having a bike that isn't working right will be a big distraction when you don't need it.

Also, if you don't know the difference between BB30 and GXP you should let a LBS do the work.

In the front on the old system yes there was a trim position. On the new 2012 RED no there is no trim position but due tot he design of the new FD you don't need a trim position, when properly set up there is no rub in any gear combination other than perhaps small/small or big/big with shorter chain stay bikes. I have the new FD on my Defy Advanced and can get all 20 positions with no rub...not that I would ever use many of those combos.

Can I ask why you think this upgrade is necessary to race a triathlon? Why not run what your brung and hang on to the money for down the road?

Does the triathlon you're doing have a net gain of greater uphill than downhill by a lot? The reason I ask is because the weight of the bike doesn't really matter as much in a triathlon unless the previous question is answered with a 'yes'. If you're going to do anything, go aero. Clip-on bars, aero helmet, proper fit, deep wheels. Unless you've got extra cash, want the bike to look good or your drivetrain is crapping out.

Oh come on. Were you born knowing what a BB30 was? Gotta learn somewhere and somebody just explained it to him, so now he's set. As for setting a press-fit bearing, yeah - let your LBS do that. Any monkey with the right tool and a torque wrench can install a GXP BB, which is one reason why I like them.

That I agree with - particularly since Red shifts a lot differently from Shimano. If you don't give yourself some time to get used to the difference, you'll find yourself shifting down instead of up during your race. Etc. It's not catastrophic or anything, but it's likely to be distracting.

Hopefully you already know this, but you also need a new cassette and a new chain. You also didn't mention the front derailleur, I have no idea whether that will be compatible or not, though people have used other Shimano FD (like Ultegra) with SRAM shifters.
