Do you guys feel that the Titanium Nitride coating on the gold chain is worth it? Does it do anything for longevity or impact the need to clean or maintain it? Does the coating wear off with use? Has anyone run both the gold and silver who could comment on whether the Ti Ni gold is quieter than the nickel plated silver model? Or - be honest now - do most get the gold primarily for looks?
I heard that some high end chains are tough to the point of breaking cheap chain tools. Is this the case with the 710?
Anyone run the KMC X101? How does the 710 compare? The idea of a chain with bushings appeals to me. But $50 for a chain!
The reason I ask is because I'm fixin' to get ready to replace the stock cranks/ring/cog/chain that came on my bike. The build will be complete after that. Not sure how I feel about the look of the gold chain with the rest of the bike being silver but if it is that much better for a few dollars more then it makes sense.

I bought the gold solely for looks. I haven't put enough miles on to really comment as to your other questions. I haven't seen much in the way of coating wear, however.

Yes, the 710 series' mushroomed pins take a little extra bit of torque/ umph to first break one side of the pin's mushroomed part. After that it's easy going pushing it out. I suggest getting at least a cyclo rivoli chain breaker tool (which does a nice job for starters) or nicer to break a 710. I have witnessed first hand, somebody break one of those el cheapo bell chainbreakers from walmart clean in half trying to break a 710.
I found that chains with bushings run smoother than those without. If you're considering a chain with bushings consider NJS-approved chains from hkk, izumi, D.I.D, etc. as well. NJS requires all chains to have bushings; the price differences between NJS approved models are due to chain plating differences. Yes, the cheapest NJS chains *will* rust like cheapo chains that come on walmart bikes.

I have a $10.00 KMC Z410 Gold. It isn't listed as Ti Ni, but it's the same coating as the 710 SL, not gold paint.
No funky wear yet. Cleans easily. 100% inaudible, but so are their nickle plated and stainless chains.
Speaking of chains, KMC has a new pimpy looking "Neo-Chrome" for those so inclined. Build a Lava-Lamp headlight and you're all set.

Yesterday I bought a few inner tubes, some finish line citrus degreaser and Phil wood oil. Tried the degreaser and lube today and I love how well it seems to have done.

This stuff works the best, costs about the same, but smells a lot more deadly than the stuff above as a trade-off:

I use Simple Green
I also only due more than clean and re-lube a chain very seldomly throughout the year, maybe quarterly or so. San Diego is pretty dry.
