Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Problem with new wheels please help.

I've just had some wheels built up with Zipp Flash Point rims. I just have a few questions. Is it normal for the rear wheel to flex a little? I stood up to sprint up a hill and my wheel would scrub my rear brake. We opened up my brakes and the rubbing stopped. The wheel appears to be true.
Also my rear wheel looks like rocks have hit the side of it. There's a bunch of what appears to be little chips on the carbon part from the spokes to half way up the rim. Not right at the spokes but half deep in the rim toward the spokes. My front wheel still looks brand new. I'm just worried since the rear wheel takes all the abuse.
My wheel build is 09 Zipp Flashpoint rim. Speedcific hubs. Sapim CX rays with a tougher Sapim spoke on the driveside. We also used tougher nipples on the driveside as well. I'm also heavy weighing 215lbs.

Some people that I know that have Zipps complain about them flexing. My Reynolds don't flex much but I'm not very heavy or powerful. I think given your weight it is normal that they are flexing.

Check the bearings, make sure the spokes are properly tensioned (although this sounds like a Mike Garcia build, so that's unlikely).

Which Flash Point rims are you using? IIRC many of them have a max rider weight of 200lb.

What happened to my post?

Edit: Why two threads for one question?

My answer is the same as before: it's normal if you weigh 215lbs.

I swear it wasn't me--although all these new mod buttons are quite confusing.

It depends upon how much over you lean the bike. ALL wheels have a certain amount of lateral flex, and the heavier and the more your lean your bike over, the more flex there will be. I knew a guy that would l lean his bike about 45-degrees to each side in sprints (we knicknamed him "the cowboy sprinter" due to his extremely bowed-out legs to accommodate the lean). Regardless of whatever wheel he used, they would rub the pads. He would actually undo the quick-release on his brakes before a sprint.

They are a Mike Garcia build. I'm pretty sure all the spoke tension would be correct. All I know is they are the latest clincher 404 style rim that he just started selling. I'm not as concerned about the rub as I am about the little chip places that have appeared on the rim. I told Mike what my weight was and we were pretty sure that wouldn't be a problem. The wheels turned out great. I guess the simplest thing to do would be to lose all that weight I need to lose.

(sorry--mod error. Post restored.)

You should call Mike. Cracking carbon rims is not a good thing.

And sorry about messing with your post-- "edit" and "reply with quote" are right next to each other.

it's pretty normal to get tiny rocks kicked up though, could it just be cosmetic chipping?

It's actually not that common. I've ridden Zipp and Blackwell Research wheels and never got a chip/scratch from a rock.

If you're having problems with an overly flexy wheel AND the clearcoat is cracking, it could be a sign of extreme badness. Might also not, but one of the reasons you pay a guy like Mike to do your wheels is so that you get answers to those questions.

I dont think its from rocks because there are quite a few of them and the front still looks like it did the day I got it. This is probably the 4th time if ridden on them.

It's a serious problem with your rim until proven otherwise. Don't ride on it until Mike evaluates it.
