Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So, unofficially, off the books, I have been told to think about a particular job assignment here @ my employment in a non official, non binding kind of way. This position will be vacated in less than A year. I may have to concider this.

Concider it hard. See what I did there?

Low cadence work always absolutely trashes my legs, and sometimes for weeks. I try to avoid it these days.

I don't keep track very well. 65?

It waxes and wanes, there's not a clear a seasonal pattern. People join and leave throughout the year.

What's weird is how difficult it's been to staff the percussion section. You'd think percussionists wouldn't be so hard to find, but we've had many practices in the last year with only two or three.

I ride right up the middle until I see a motor vehicle in my helmet mirror or my Varia beeps or my scalp tingles and then I scoot for the gutter.

Ride in the center of the opposing lane. You will clearly see every car approaching you (no need for a Fredly mirror or fancy radar), and you won't hold up anyone behind you, encouraging risky close passes.

It's a win-win.

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

I used it to distinguish the roadbed from the concrete shoulder in that case.

What kind of RPMs are you talking - I thought that you typically spun at lower cadences? Well, "lower" by roadie standards. And when you say that it trashes your legs, do you just mean sore muscles, or something beyond that?

I avoid low rpm workouts, but when I am on my SS and there's a hill, I have no choice but to grind it out at low cadence. I can tolerate it in small doses.

I think that was me. At least, it may have been me. A few years ago, during the first royal wedding, I expressed frustration that Americans were obsessing over the marriage of a family that my ancestors fought and died to throw off the yoke of, and that's not the last time I said something like that. The French princess in The King said it best: "All monarchy is illegitimate".

Now, British people are often lovely.

Tri geeks often spin at low cadences, as in 60 in the case of some pros. I typically spin at much higher than that, nearly 100 back when I was doing my short stuff and more like low-90s now.

As for "trashing", it wrecks my muscles so badly that I can't produce meaningful power, and trying hurts. The subsequent recovery encourages me to not try again for a long time.

IRL I'm equipped with neither bicycle horn, nor bicycle bell, so I have no advantage over any of the other band members.

Wow. There are 8 rides posted for tomorrow on my club’s website. Amazing how a little warmth gets cyclists to come out.
