Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Does anyone else live in the Ohio River basin?

People don't pay attention to geography like they used to, but Velo Vol is old school.

I have determined that with the exception of two years at school, and a few summers away, I have lived my entire life in the Ohio River watershed, home of America's greatest waterways.

DougRNS once lived in it too, but now he's in parched America, and can only look enviously upon our lush green valleys.

Me neither. And as far as I know, none of my ancestors ever did either. My mom's family is from Chicago which is close, but not quite.

Paternal ancestors migrated west thru the Ohio River Basin. Mrs. rjones28's father is from that area.

Some ancestors on mom's side were from Memphis on that other river. That's close.

One interesting thing is that the Tennessee River flows through Chattanooga, and one might assume that everything close flows into it. But actually no, the basin only goes like 10 miles east in one part. Beyond that water flows southwest, eventually into the Alabama River. #GeographyFunFacts

Another fun exercise is to pick a state and trace the history of how its boundaries came to be where they are today.

This talk discusses some of them.

Stuck in the eighth ring of hell for the next few hours. Going to be a long day. Slept maybe five hours on the plane, with a light dose of Valium, and Starbucks is barely doing the trick. After Hawaiian coffee, Starbucks is also making me sad.

Until my generation, no one in my family felt the need to venture further afield than vacations in Maine. I don’t think anyone (other than my aunt while she was married) spent any significant time outside of New England, come to think of it. This is all my paternal side; my mother’s side has people in CA and AZ, and they grew up in Boulder, Houston, and Rochester.

Meanwhile, upcoming trips include a return to Maui (sans in-laws) and Porto, Portugal. AG will also be going with her family to Chengdu, but that’s one I’m skipping because even thinking about a three-hop flight makes me sick.

I’m also officially giving up on bringing the full-frame cameras on vacation. Too big, heavy, and expensive to get as much use as I’d like. Shot way more in Rome with the M50, which is still a whole different level from the iPhone. And can even bring the telephoto.
