Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Serious advice re hearing aids. If you or someone you know needs one, and there is any (even remote) connection to military service, see if you can get them from the VA. They do a great job with hearing aids and the coverage is quite generous.

Had to cancel today’s club ride due to slushy roads. Time for more fake miles in the basement.

My first really good road bike was a Panasonic Team America, circa 1985. It had full Dura-Ace 7400. I think the price was about $1000. Sadly, it got stolen only after a few months.

The best? Really? How about the announcement "Hey there, we're going to hire you and pay you to spend half your time here farting around on the internet"?

I think I like those blue walking around shoes.

I don't have a problem hearing that stuff, I have a problem hearing people talking to me. Of course that has it's benefits around the wife, but still.

At this time, the only way I would wear one is with a wire attached running down my collar to give the impression I'm on a security team. Otherwise I'm too proud, dammit!!!

dang, 8 am the latest I have slept in, in a long time. The child is finally started to sleep more which brings me to a moral dilemma. I wake up expecting the child to be screaming she is not screaming, so I smile to myself and go back to sleep. Only Now I can’t sleep because I am scared she has stopped breathing or something, but I don’t want to check because I don’t want to wake her if she is indeed a sleep.

I have a friend with VA hearing aids. They just replaced his first set which I'm guessing were several years old, same as mine.

A good set costs as much as a crabon bike with Ultegra. Medicare and most insurance does not give good coverage if any. My vets all tell me they get theirs for free.

I signed up for a 2 hour endurance ride on Zwift. I did fine but got bored after one hour and bailed.

First child, I take it? How old? The impulse to stare at their chest, looking for the rise and fall off breathing, mostly goes away by the second child.

I know that Ive told this story a couple times but my wife asked me to pick up aluminum foil at Costco. After returning with 10 years worth of aluminum foil, she informed me that she said cooking oil. And that's what finally convinced me that I had put off hearing aids too long.

20 months, and yes first child. She literally just started sleeping the whole night two nights ago. She usually wakes up at midnight and 4 am. So the night has been eerily quiet.

My friend loves his new ones. Sadly, his hearing is so bad that even with hearing aids, he still has problems. I do, too, but not nearly as bad as him. Sadly, I've never been able to wear them on the bike due to wind noise so I still can't hear riding partners, especially deep voices who often seem to be low-talkers.

My first set from Costco were $1800 many years ago but I opted for a little higher quality set this time for $2800. Sound quality is much better or maybe my old ones had degraded and I just didn't notice.

I drank the Kool Aid and bought some of the cheaper Assos bibs from Excel and wore them on the trainer yesterday. At 30', I had a sensitive spot on my right butt cheek. I'm hoping it's a pre-existing condition from the trainer and not a seam or fold from the new shorts. I've had problems in the same area before so it may have nothing to do with new bibs... I hope.

BTW, 2ºA this morning. I'm thinking I'll put a rear end in a recliner today instead of riding.

edit: Oops, it’s now 1°A

Hope so. I expect you know, but worth reminding everyone this winter that you should stand up for a few seconds every 5-10 minutes while on the trainer, or you will have a sore butt before you know it.
