The great bike refresh and giveaway thread

Some of you may have read I decided to make my addiction work for my students at an inner city high school that was hit hard by various catastrophes. My kids don’t really have much.

...So, we decided as a department, Social Studies of course...to award students of the week to kids who are hanging tough toward graduating and escaping. Then we draw from that group to give away a Jdawg refreshed, refurbished or customized bike each week starting with March madness.

I thought it might be a good journal to post them here. By the time I am done I will be penniless with a smile!

Here are the candidates thus far...

Bravo. Much more rewarding and important than any flip if you can do so without it becoming a financial burden.

Good for you and your helpers! Helping others always puts a smile on my face and a warm spot in my heart. This is what we, humans, should be all about.

While riding in Jamaica, two or so years ago, I stopped to pee, drink and see what was in a small park like grove of trees. There, painted by hand on a rough hewn plank were these words...

"We earn a living by what we get and earn a life by what we give". A profound thought to be found while out and about on this old but incredible Bianchi...

Better to use the compulsion to spend money on some bike parts that will be used rather than hoarded! I’m in a decent place so it doesn’t hurt that bad!

That's awesome to hear and such a great thing to spread the gift of cycling LOVE. I would be interested to hear how the kids reacted when they received the bikes.

The world needs more cycling enthusiasts.

Oddly, the one most kids are drooling over is the darn Huffy that I cleaned up and painted the fenders. The first Cannondale was a hit.

the first was already given away. Cheap single speed the the kid says he loves, but is afraid it will be stolen. I bought him a Bell care package...

Most of the students in line for a bike are girls, mostly shorter. It is actually really tough to find fixie/single speed candidates in those small sizes and the girls bikes that are available are either 1. overpriced for my self-financed budget or 2. Huffy types. I actually have a bundle (5) of larger frame (54cm-56cm) fixies that I bought from a gentleman for $75 total who supplies pizza delivery bikes. Best deal I have ever gotten! Lots of Canvas to work with for custom paint!

Amazingly, the painted Huffy was a hit yesterday when it was unveiled...even guys were drooling over it. My department members said I should paint some cheap bikes with some bling and they won't notice the names.

Of course, it somewhat defeats the purpose of breathing life into older quality steeds, since Huffys are being churned out in the millions!

Great thread and project. What model is that Cannondale MTB? I love the teal with the orange cable housing. That must be an 80s model right?

it is. I could never pin it down to a model weirdly. It seems like an SM400 from 1985-86 but I could never pin down.

it was tough to part with that one!

Well you did a great job on that Huffy so I don't blame them for getting excited over it. Those single speeds are flashy looking as well so I'm sure they will be popular. You're making an older bike, which probably wouldn't appeal to the younger generation who want the latest and the greatest, look fun and different.

Can you use a set of 26 x 1.5” Nashbar slicks? I have an unridden pair that I would happily donate to the cause. PM me if you’re interested.

I would love the help! And the conversation, though I have definitely converted my girlfriend to the cause. She is awesome and learning the ways of the bicycle! (Hopefully I am not teaching her bad mechanical skillz...

I found this Bianchi mountain bike at the dump, last summer. There were a few lesser bikes there, most like the Bianchi is very little used condition...

I am really not interested in restoring old mountain bikes and gave this one away to a fellow who has not interest in vintage road bikes. That fellow gave me this in return, some time later (soon to be a project)...
