Every Marine knows what this type of accommodation is, This is 1986 , Futenma Marine Corps Air Station, Okinawa Japan.
That's my OLMO with full Campy parked outside of my rack area. I might have been the only guy on the entire Island with a kick ass Italian race bike.

And no AC when I was there.... a dude on the AFB had a Centurion.... He used to ride it on the habu trail around Futenma.

Hear that the new installation, on board Guam, is some nice digs. Bet they will welcomed back by the resident Guamanians, listened to in interview of a few last week, very favorable comments on having the USMC return in full.

Its not as if the Okinawan people didn't ask them to leave though and there are some bad feelings on both sides, I had to walk out of a bid opening a few years back, a former Air Force wife repping for another contractor, was mouthing off about how nicer Oki would be when they "threw" Marines off. Like to have let her have both barrels, but another contractor's rep got me out of the room to cool off, and damned of her firm didn't get the bid that day. Sucked all the way around.

Yes, the Air Farce has that entitlement problem amongst some, and their dependents on Oki had those issues. My guess is that, without someone there to consider themselves superior to, the glow will come off that island life. If the command cuts down on the duty-free buying trips they seem to make weekly to other Asian places, the luster will fade quickly. It costs more to support an Air Force wife than a Marine infantryman.

I have zero doubt that some, OK, a lot, of those wives will miss the Marines, as well, . May sound low rent, but it's a fact, nonetheless.

I don't blame the resentment of Okinawans, as WWII found them sacrificed to the war and propaganda had them believing horrible things that led them to do horrible things to themselves and their families. However, they sure did not seem to mind the hundreds, if not thousands, of on-base jobs, and the economy outside the gates.

The island could be a terrific tourist destination, but that coral kind of kills the beach fun. It's beautiful, for sure. Futenma will make a nice airport.

When the Chinese come calling, they'll be wishing they had the Marines back.
