I was riding in Long Beach, WA this morning. Foggy and cool and not much bite in the air. When I finished at noon, the fog was burning off and I actually saw some blue sky. There is hope!

There is supposed to be a weak front pushing this east over the next couple days. It can't come quick enough.

Yesterday, I went riding again. As stated earlier, right along the coastline, the air quality was not a problem. The prevailing winds are moving most of the smoke eastward and the marine layer with its on-shore flow keeps the coastline clear.

It was a nice ride and worth doing. The automobile drivers are exhibiting a lot of craziness (cabin fever?) but the riding was well worth it.

You have prevailing winds?? I'm envious. Eureka is only at 109 right now, but it's rising. The first week we were near 300.

Nope, no riding. Fortunately 80% of my shopping is within 1/2 mile, so walking is the most practical mode of errand running.

I love that area . My sister used to live in Fortuna and when we visited from down here, I was envious of the slow pace. We visited so many great places while we were up there . I fantasized about having one of my bikes with me, lots of back roads and wonderful scenery.

It was weirdly overcast in Chicago today, even with a prediction of 100 sun. Realized it was smoke when I saw the sunset.

Stay safe everyone!

AQI here is 528. I think I'll hold my breathe for a while.

Praying for rain overnight.

Well praise God, we have some RAIN! It was iffy as far as potential tonight. Not much was/is expected to fall, but we will take whatever we can get to help begin clearing things up.

Yesterday I went to see some friends for beers and a game night. This very weird orange orb in the sky was the size of the moon, but in the sun's position. I have never seen the sun that large in the sky--it was huge--and staring at it was not a problem (it was plenty dim enough).

Visibility last night was also a paltry 1.25 miles if I read the map correctly. There is a whole other neighborhood on a big hill (Magnolia) that rises and stretches off to the right/north...don't know where it went! [FYI I was driving north and stopped to take this photo--no riding was done by me at all]

Why, yes, yes I do. It always seems to be a headwind, too. :-)

A bit more seriously, there is an almost constant wind out of the west (on-shore). It there isn't, it is usually a Santa Ana wind from the east.

prevailing wind, noun,
The usual wind in an area or region — used to refer to the direction of the wind.
The prevailing wind in this region is from the east.

That’s an interesting curse you have there! 😁

Yeah, here in the Sacramento area, it’s been ditto smoke in the air, and last night I got a strong sense of the woods burning somewhere around. 🤔 It’s hard to describe, but it’s more than just the smell.

EDIT: Meant to say, I ride every day, to survive. I was touring in the San Diego area, when the Covid 19 mess got started. 🙄

At least they’re talking about another incentive check, huh? 😉

Ditto. Really interesting light last night and this morning.

If I didn't know what it was it would be a lot easier to appreciate

ABSOLUTELY might be an otter or a Nutria - I'm no Dr. Dolittle, or even a cat vs dog identifier, but I couldn't see its tail - he/she was gathering sticks so I assumed beaver/dam I guess. All taken at the bottom of Golden Gardens - the BeaNutriOtter was in the pond at the very end of the park (north).

Here it is tho, for identification and I assume correction:

And here's a couple of totally unfiltered point and snap pics of Friday's evening sun.

Hoping nature's pendulum swings soon and steady for y'all.
As an old friend posted yesterday, "I moved from NYC to California for the clean air. Who do I complain to?"

I'm shooting for this weekend, hoping the clear air will hold in the Bay Area. Today is the first day that it isn't "unhealthy" outside. I wanted to get out during the Labor Day weekend, but when I had time, the air was gross.

My father-in-law lives in Chicago and texted me this morning, imploring us to "please keep your smoke to yourselves."

The only riding this week was on the couch because of the smoke by Matthew Pendergast, on Flickr
The only riding I've been doing lately is watching the TDF from the couch.

We had some rain overnight and this morning and the AQI has improved to 126 - still unhealthy but a noticable improvement. I can see the mountains again..

Yeah, I think it's an otter. They're cuter. Is that pool attached to the sound? That would make more sense. Never seen a beaver in Seattle, so I was curious. Nice video capture and pics.
