Shimano Deore XT Removal issue

I might not be the sharpest tool in the box, neither am I the most blunt but this has got me totally beat! I want to remove my Deore XT chainring from my old GT bike but can't figure out how to do it!
I've removed the central nut from both sides and get met with this (see pics), I even bought TL-UN96 before I touched to bike thinking I needed this for this chainset but can't see how it will help!
Any advice appreciated

Wrong tool my friend. You need a bog standard crank removal tool for square tapers like the Park CWP-7. Lots of videos online, just remember to look for bolt washers inside the opening,. They'll ruin your day and your crank.

You need what's called a crank puller.

Use the advice above to remove the crank arm from the bike then you will need to use the TL-UN96 to remove the nut on the backside of the drive crank arm to remove the chainring . hope that makes sense

heres a pic of the nut for the chainring. (compliments of Retrobike )

If you decide to remove the large ring from the crankarm, note that there is lock nut stop ring next to the ring with the 8 notches. Give it a good cleaning and you'll see it. The ring is easily pried off.

Use a bolt and washers to hold the TL-UN96 in place against the lock nut if the nut is stuck.
