in todays world, drafting is mostly going to be accepted by someone you know. Chances are, if you dont know them, they wouldn't like it.

I'd rather you came up on my side and chat awhile first. But if you simply let me know you are there on my wheel I'd be okay with it.

Clearly some people care. They need their private space in public places. There are some that think if you are 20 feet behind you are on their wheel.

I've had two or three people get really bent out of shape when I was like 5 bike lengths behind them. So odd. If I'm being honest, one time it actually encouraged me to stay "on their wheel" and troll 'em for a bit. *shrug*

How close do I have to be to be stalking you?

If you aren't within less than a bike length from me, then I won't consider you drafting or on my wheel. I'd just think you are behind me if more than a bike length.

They hang freely, they are just something to grab while I rest my elbows on my handlebars. They dont support any weight, just makes an aggressive riding position easier. To be perfectly honest they are mainly there to trigger a lycra brigade or whatever you call group rides if I pass them

Couple weeks ago I did have a guy pass me while I was puzzling about something and let my speed drop. I estimated he was about the same fitness level as me, but he was a tad faster on the level parts and I climbed at a faster speed than he did. It was quite difficult to stay well behind him, but likewise I didn't really want to pass. This was a day I was trying to ride easy.

Sometimes I was 200 feet back sometimes 15 feet back. Wound up following for about 8 miles before they turned off. I hope he didn't think I was on his wheel and writing about me on some other bike forum.

Be polite and ask... it's not hard.
Just the other day I was about 4 miles from home after a 45 mile ride. I was on a MUP and came up on a rather large and athletic person and jumped on his wheel. He knew I was there and picked up his speed, at that point I asked if it was OK to sit in his draft. I told him I would stay back enough and not attempt to pass. He was cool with it. After 3 miles I came to a crossing where I get off the MUP and said "i'm dropping off, thanks for the draft". He wave and continued on.

BTW, he was wearing a NYPD cycling team jersey.

I want to see the copper aero bar setup I'm having a hard time picturing this. So they dangle loose or you zip tied thru the tubes?

I don't have a problem if someone wants to hop on my wheel. I'm going to keep riding the speed I want to ride. If that works for you, cool.

He didn't, because you weren't.

He might have thought you were a stalker, however.

Urban commuting I don't want anyone drafting. Too many unexpected things that can pop up and require a quick brake or veer.
Not that it's often an issue for us old & slow, smell the roses types.

Too help salvage something from this thread I will say +1. Last year, during my very urban commute, I was nearly rear ended by a close-following cyclist when a van suddenly cut in front of me and I had to hit the brakes hard. In her defense, she was wearing a shirt.

don't be complaining when the person you drafting lets out a ripe one.

I wouldn't mind if someone asked to draft, I would say OK. I would be less eager to draft a stranger unless somehow they made me feel comfortable. I've had too many knuckleheads, even on semi-organized group rides who don't know anything about how to do it safely. I don't like schooling people on the go. I only draft people who I feel comfortable with.
