Not bicycle related (yet) but I picked up a 60's Husqvarna Combina 19E sewing machine for free!

A fully mechanical industrial-ish machine that should have no problem going through heavier material.
Cast iron case with lots of stylized 60's plastic.

I did replace the incandescent lightbulb with an LED version because a 25W light so close to your hand gets hot very quickly. Besides, 2W for more light than a 25W lightbulb ever produced is a win in my book.

It needs some work but will be used to make a new cloth chaincase for the tandem this year. Though I will need some practice first. XD
The upper and lower thread tension is fully manual and I think it needs some oiling.

Not quite saved from the dump, but certainly from moldering away in an outbuilding! I first met this bike c.1999 or so when I saw it locked up with a flat tire on campus. It also had the last name of one of my student workers, and it emerged that it belonged to his uncle. I wound up buying it and getting the story. Allegedly, it's a c.1971 Mercian that was hit by a car and repaired by Mike Melton c.1972 during his tenure working for Joe Azar in Columbia, SC. When I got it, it was a rusty dog's breakfast of a bike, but I had a strange deal going with Jim Cunningham of CyclArt wherein I traded him a raft load of old French tandem bits in poor shape for this frame to be prepped, dents filled, braze-ons added and a nice hunter green powder coat. I then built it up for a friend and sold it to her for a very reasonable price. In 2009 she was in the first two miles of a local benefit ride when someone half-wheeled her, taco-in the front wheel and sending her to the ground. She quit riding after that and the bike sat unrepaired for years - until I ran into her husband while grocery shopping. I mentioned I was looking around for my 13-year-old son's next bike and asked if she had considered parting with the old Mercian. She decided to simply give it to me, and today I picked it up.



Your eyes aren't deceiving you - that's a Nervex Professional top head lug with what appears to be some sort of Bocama lower head lug. I suspect the original lower lug was damaged in the crash.


The powder coat looks nice and shiny underneath the dirt. It's certainly a diminutive thing!


I'm hoping the only thing bent here is the handlebars.


Pity about the wheel - that's a Mavic MA. I bet I can swap this and the surviving rear out for a set of Sun CR-18s and re-use the DT butted stainless spokes.

I'll go start a thread about this bike so I can update it as I make it roadworthy again.

Local pick up. Pretty clean Lotus. Needed tubes and tires and all I had were these cross tires. Shakedown ride this evening and all seems good. My first experience with aluminum. Tune up should be easy. Green tape on top tube because the cable guide needs reriveted to the top tube. If that’s possible.

Picked up this 1993 Cannondale R400 at an auction last night. Looks to be all original but storage was not nice to it. Somebody seemed to be using some gold paint around it so there are some spots and overspray here and there, but should clean up nicely. For $46 I'll take it.

These are the seller's pix - it needs tires, tubes, a different saddle, bearings overhauled and rear wheel trued, but for $40 I don't think I did too badly! I need it like I need a hole in the head, but need is never what it's about, is it? Maybe I'll just mothball it until the next Clunker Challenge ...

I posted earlier about finding this next to the co-op's dumpster and Charles Wahl PMed me asked if I'd be willing to help him acquire it. Feeling uneasy about grabbing a junk bike not actually in the dumpster I phoned the co-op. Since they have such odd hours I expected to have to leave a message and maybe never hear back but a young lady answered immediately and told me that anything in or near the dumpster was okay to take, so I got myself right back down there and grabbed it. Charles and I will figure things out from here. 23" Nishiki Backroads from about '85.




While I was near the dumpster I saw this and would have ignored it except that it had two good Continental City Ride tires in size 26 x 1 3/8, just what I need for my Raleigh Sports. The little bike itself is really kind of neat and I really wish I had some use for it. Sears Free Spirit, ladies' step-through with 26 x 1 3/8 wheels, all steel components so it's very basic but it has a lugged frame of decent construction; not crimped stays but slotted fork tube ends and stays with brazed dropouts. ESGE brake bridge. I suspect it was made by Puch. Hated to leave it there.


I'll find a use for these.

Literally pulled this out of the huge scrap metal container at the municipal dump (in Sweden), last year. Was told this was not allowed, but managed to sweet-talk the person working there. Incredible condition, I've just done a basic clean and regrease, plus new tyres, cable inners and bar tape.

I emailed the county road maintenance department and gave the the location and a picture of the remnant of the sheared off post. I emphasis that the post end pointed at oncoming traffic with its jagged end.



The next business day I had a reply saying replacement would take 7-14 days. 3 days later I had another email saying the job was complete. I was back on Auberry Road today for the first time since I reported the destroyed sign.
