What in tarnation

A friend sent me this and wasn’t really sure what I was looking at or what to do with it except for obviously post it here. I’ve got no context other than someone in Germany made it.

Looks pretty neat, but I would imagine it would bend really quickly. You can bend that 3/8 rebar by hand.

I’m curious how you choose which components to pair with such a thing. The ones chosen appear to be crap from what we can see...but then why wouldn’t they be? I imagine with however this thing rides, a nicer crankset and pedals aren’t going to make a difference.

Of course it’s also going to come down to what they are able to actually stretch to a bike that wasn’t meant to be a bike.

I'm guessing East Germany circa 1958?

Medieval training device used to teach consumers the importance of buying the proper size frame, this one demonstrates the downfalls of a frame that is too large.

I'm just trying to understand why there is a lock on that bike. Seems a bit superfluous.

(and nomadmax already posted my first reaction... i.e. this is just the ultimate Schwinn Varsity)

It's for attaching and securing other (more worthy) bikes as theft deterrence.

MUP battering ram. Takes a while to get it up to speed, but once there even a pram in the wheels won't slow it down. That's over an inch of solid steel in each "tube".

At first I thought this was a Columbus SLX build, but then I remembered the spiraling is supposed to be on the inside..

Looks like some construction worker had too much time on his hands. Probably should have used green bar for rust protection.

Looks like #8 main frame at 2.67#/ft

that reminds me of a review of a composite bike in the April 1994 issue of Bicycle Guide. I think both of these bikes sprang from the same sort of genius!
