Hi, I'm new so if I am posting to the wrong place please have mercy.
i have recently come into possession of a bike frame and forks that appear to be quite old and the metal plate on the neck identifies it as The Raliegh.

it also has Raliegh cranks and handlebars.
can someone tell me something about this bike?

We'll need pictures which you can't post until you have 10 posts. In the meantime you can put them in an album here and one of the more savvy members can share then for you. I've never done it myself. If there's anything left of it somebody here should be able to give you a positive ID. If these guys can't, nobody can.

The frame is probably from between 1890-1980, most likely painted black, and used to have two wheels.

any chance that you can tell us the color(s) of the frame?
names or words on any of the components?
Serial number? maybe under the bottom bracket (i.e. the part of the frame where the crank bearings are).

On a serious note, if you begin doing any research yourself, please be aware that it is spelled "Raleigh" rather than "Raliegh" as you have written it in the title and your first post.

Depending on the year, Raleigh was one of the largest or else the very largest manufacturer of bicycles in Britain for nearly a century. There are hundreds of Raleigh bicycle models ranging all types of uses, that obviously changed dramatically in form and function as technology progressed over time. Your best bet for getting fast results from us is to provide photos, so you should either continue posting or else make an album, as mentioned by others above.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, we really need to see the whole frame but from the original color, head badge, chrome cable stop for center pull brakes and crankset I'm leaning toward the mortal remains of a 1979 Asian built Super Grand Prix. It may have looked similar to this one when new.

The late 70's Super Grand Prix was basically the same as a Super Course with a plain steel frame and a lesser set of derailleurs.
I still own my original 1978 model, which looks like the one pictured above, mine says Made in England on it yet. I think they went Asian after 1979. What always surprised me was how close the SGP and same year Super Coarse were in weight, only a few ounces different overall when comparing two 25.5" frame bikes. Personally, I always thought the SGP was the sleeper in that line up, it sold for a good bit less than the SC and rode very much the same. Mine came with a padded leather saddle, Suntour VGT derailleurs, and Weinmann concave rims with high flange Normandy hubs. The SC got low flange Atom hubs. Both have standard 68mm bottom brackets.

I think you're right, I was of the understanding the head badge with the hash marks at the bottom indicated an Asian built bike, I don't know for sure though. I think 1980 was when production started getting sent to Japan and Taiwan. The details visible were consistent with a couple 79 Super GP's I found pictures of but I've since come across pictures of later lower end models with that crankset, approximate color and center pulls. The ridge on the top of the fork crown has me thinking it' a lower end model. The SN didn't show up on any lists I could make sense of. His best bet is probably to see what's under the rattle can paint job.

A branding used for bikes and accessories early on in the 70’s.
the Rampar bikes started out as replacements for the Record. A bike that’s spec was falling fast behind others in its price point.

Hello All,

From the blue color of the headtube this appears to be a Raleigh Record. I sold many of these similar bikes in the early 1980's. If you look at the link and go to the 1983 Raleigh catalog see the Raleigh Record. Not so sure about "The Raleigh" badge however.

Your Raleigh frame was manufactured in 1981 by Matsush¡ta/National of Japan.

The 1981 Raleigh Gran Sport model had a dark blue colour, with a lighter blue head tube.
