Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So, I'm thinking about my next bike. It will be performance carbon... maybe a SystemSix or TCR Advanced. My heart says get DuraAce or Red but my reality/budget is going to probably say 105 or Rival. I'm not a racer (at least not road) but like to mix it up on fast group rides. No huge mountains around here and I can lose plenty off my frame so weight weenism isn't a part of the decision.

For those that have multiple bikes... how to the lower/mid tier groups stack up? Any more frequent adjusting to keep them in tune? I have 5+ year old Ultegra 10 speed so I'm thinking the current generation 105 will likely be superior. My CX bike has Rival and I think it's just fine when racing that.

Like most things currently manufactured, for the most part they are all good these days. There are exceptions, for sure, such as some of the junk coming out of the Orient. The lower level/mid level groupos are just a little heavier. There is almost a direct correlation between the weight of a groupo and its price. The "Trickle down" effect that most retailers and marketers talk about is actually a real thing. It's sort of strange ... but the more you pay ... the less you get, (weight wise).

If you are not going to race competitively, then most of the reason for having the highest quality groupo is bragging rights and the snob factor. I know it is with me. I could have saved a whole bunch of money purchasing the same frame with Ultegra rather than Dura-Ace, but I've been working two jobs this year and I wanted to reward myself by taking some of the extra money and purchasing the "best". It will probably be the last time in my life that I can afford more that I really need.

To directly answer your question ... no. My Madone Ultegra/105/no-name mix does not require any more or any less maintenance than the Dura-Ace 7900 Kestrel. Right now, I use the Trek more than the Kestral mostly because of the gearing on the Trek and that I'm still sorting out the high-speed front wheel wobble on the Kestral. I pick up the Kestrel from the shop this afternoon. They did a fitting for me, which balanced my weight better and installed a longer stem, which will shift my weight slightly more forward, also giving a better fore and aft weight balance. Hopefully, I won't get any more high-speed front wheel wobble/violent oscillation.
