Have you ever done a spin class? Doing different riding styles to different songs is one way of mixing it up. Go to a gym and do a couple to get a feel for it, and then go home and put your own music on and mix it up a bit. I did this for a while but became very bored with the trainer once I was able to spend more time on the road. I also race track and have some routines associated with that and I found that having to concentrate on putting on the right amount of resistance and watching the time to do the intervals made the whole process go in no time. That was of course until I did some of the harder sessions where you just can't wait for the time to finish.

As for roadie style training, I haven't really done any on the bike besides the spin style, but I know most interval stuff is focussed around 20min and sometimes shorter intervals. Do you have a HRM? If so then you can make up your own based on the heart rate zones. I've read about it but some searching should be able to get you some detailed information.

Indoor trainer and Spinervals DVDs. You'll either love or hate Coach Troy. Great workouts though. Beyond that, I like to ride the trainer while watching sports or movies. I either do progressive intervals or ride steady for an hour or two (with a warm up and cool down).

I've thought about doing water aerobics, for great low impact /cardio option. If you can wear bike shorts riding in public, you can wear a swim suit, you learn to get over it!

VERY interested in the site and the workouts/plans, although we're a few weeks away from the indoor season.

I want to come back to this thread and say that trainerroad.com is pretty great. If you're looking ahead to the long cold winter months and planning on spending time on a trainer, you should look at the site and its virtual power option.

That site looks really cool, especially since you can integrate the workouts with the Sufferfest videos. I may have to check more into that tonight after work. Thanks for pointing this out!

What type of indoor trainers do people have here? I'd like to get one to build up my pedaling range (post hip surgery) before I get on the bike outdoors. Our prime riding times are coming up (in FL), and I want to get on my bike soon.

Excluding rollers, there are three basic types of indoor trainers.

Fluid, Mag and Wind

You can do a search to find out about the differences.

A few of the more popular manufacturers are as follows:
https://www.kurtkinetic.com/
https://whttps://www.blackburndesign.com
www.cycleops.com/

There are many more as well.

I have a kurtkinetic (fluid), which has been great for me.

I am another one with a Kurt Kinetic Fluid Road Machine. They are really the best that I found. Stable, Solid, Lifetime Guarantee, and the most consistent 'road feel'. I highly recommend the Kurt!

Are you thinking of not riding in the fall or winter? Try riding all year around, even if they are short 20-30 milers. They will REALLY help your riding come spring and summer.
