Whistler Granfondo today - 122 kms & 1700 meters of climbing. Just over 5,000 cyclists, it's an amazing ride.

Did the Civil War Century again. This is my 5th one I think. Still one of my favorite rides. Almost a sentimental choice for me. 104 miles, beeeaaauuuuutiful weather. Legs were a little fried at the end, but that's because I went out too hard at the start:

Hah! I've done that, except while my youngest was soccer practice. Sometimes you have to fit that ride in wherever you can.

Hey, I was there, too. Yes, it's a great ride and yes, the weather was just beautiful (clear and about 50F at the start and clear and in the 70s at the finish). Much nicer than last year, when a monster thunderstorm hit early in the afternoon.

My legs were also cooked by the end. Even though the last third of the course is relatively easy, the hills in the first two-thirds of the course, including the Richey Road climb (about 3 miles and 900 feet at about mile 60), leaves me riding with tender legs over the last miles. Looks like you rode several minutes ahead of me the whole way:

Out with my partner again today intending to go to Dunham as well as find the remains of an old 12th Century (1173) Motte and Bailey Castle.

We had to find a secluded path by a very busy road and near to a motorway which wasnt hard to find though the entrance was very tricky for my bike.

The path was very green, quiet and beautiful and we soon found the remains which were just a large mound covered in trees.

Its called a Norman Motte & Bailey type of castle but was probably just a small fort used as a Watchouse for the de Massey family who lived in Dunham Massey just up the road.

The path was very narrow, virtually singletrack and much easier to ride one way than coming back and there was a part of it which had begun collapsing as shown.

We thought about going back but didnt fancy going back through the difficult gate so had to pull my bike up the slope between us as it was very difficult to get enough grip to push it up but we managed it.

It was worth it for the pretty scenery on the path further up even with the stile into the field and made it into the lanes much easier to ride on.

Very pleasant weather about 14C very sunny at first but then clouded over later, rain due at 7 pm but will see.

Which it was like this all the time

Didnt bother with Dunham as that was new and more than enough.

44 miles today. Not a bad start for a week of riding. I miss my 66 mile weekend rides and I'm hoping my riding partner's shoulder heals up so we can resume our weekend routine.

When I got home there was a text from a friend apologizing for almost hitting me. I don't recall any close calls but she swears it was me.

Yup, once you get past Gettysburg it's kind of a slog through the corn and the headwinds. Even the picturesque covered bridge at Roddy Creek didn't make up for it Lots of fun though, that's for sure.

Friday - 16.2 miles in 1:45, with a stop at a bike shop and a stop to adjust saddle (trying out a Toupe). Did a 45 minute stretch at 13 mph stopping for several red lights; changed gear from 49/23 to 46/20.

Sunday - 20.2 miles in 1:50, stopping for red lights and a few stop signs, too; 46/20 gear. First 20+ mile ride since I don't know when. In @#$%ing running shoes - I gotta get my shoe/pedal indecision resolved!

I lived in Indianapolis from 1988 - 1999. This pic brings back a lot of good memories of rides there. I rode mostly in Marion, Hancock, Shelby, and Johnson counties.
