I never made it to my 60 miles this past weekend. I read all your advice. Pack the high carb stuff. I need to drive 107 miles to get to this trail. I need to do it once as it will complete seeing this 90+ miles of the trail.

BUT ... I was so excited and didnt get a good sleep. Heart was pounding, etc and it was 1 AM before I sleep. Adrenaline overflow? I have to wake up at 6 AM to get there.

Bummer.

Next time, you might want to consider doing this even if you don't get enough sleep. I've done long rides on insufficient sleep, and I survived. To an extent, I can substitute extra food for lack of sleep. Coffee helps, too.

So you didn't ride? Everyone who rides a lot has this problem. There are a couple rides I do where I have to get up at 2:30am. The amount of sleep you get the night before really doesn't matter. What matters is the amount of sleep you got the previous night. You get a good night's sleep that night, say 9 hours or so, you'll be good to go. Ignore the morning-of butterflies. They'll go away after 1/2 hour on the bike, honest. Have a cup of coffee when you get up and something to eat. You'll be fine.

My first double metric, I had to be on the road by 4:30am-- I got about 3.5 hours of sleep that night. The first 62 miles, half in the pitch dark, I averaged 19.9mph.

You need less sleep than you think.

I don't like too sugary of food and as long as the pace is slower I suggest nuts and dried fruit. Or just a PBandJ sandwich.

This is a great way to get a lot of calories while not carrying a lot of weight. I eat about a pound of cashews per week whether I'm riding or not.
