FX Sport 4 or Dual Sport 4?
While I really don't need to, I am getting the itch to replace my 2015 FX 7.2 (rim brakes) with a newer Trek that has disc brakes. I mainly ride on local paved trails, but some of it is crushed gravel as well. Typical rides for me are 15 to 35 miles. On my 2015, I had replaced the tires with H5 700x42c tires to get more traction and comfort (I'm 45 y/o and 6'2" ~230 lb).
Anyway, after some research and short parking lot rides and the local Trek bike shop, I am leaning towards these two particular models:
2020 FX Sport 4
2019 Dual Sport 4
I think moving to the FX S4 would be the most natural move for me since more similar to my current in form. Looks like this new one has a carbon front fork for some better absorption of bumps. DS4 looks cool that I can engage or disengage the front shocks if needed. But the DS4 is a bit heavier too of course. Price on these two is close enough that I'd consider basically the same.
For either bike, I may replace the stock tires with the same wider H5 tires like I have now (as long as they can fit).
Which should I lean towards? FX per my initial instinct or is the DS better for my usage? OR something else? Thanks!

My suspicion is these two bikes have a different feel when riding them. The FX is likely a little more aggressive in terms of handling and riding position and the DS should feel a bit more relaxed. After riding both, did one speak to you more than the other? My first consideration would be what the ol' butt-o-meter tells you. In other words, what feels best to your body when riding?
I really like DS-type bikes (the two bikes I ride the most are a Giant Roam and a Redline MTB that I've sort of hybridized). I don't place a high regard on weight; in fact, I pull a trailer with my Roam. But that doesn't mean the DS-style bike would be best for you. You are right that the FX will probably feel most like your current bike, but give both a shot with an open mind and let your body tell you the right decision.

Thanks. I'll probably need to do another "test drive" on each. When I rode the DS, it was a L and I'd be targeting a XL (22.5") like my current FX 7.2. I didn't screw with the proper seat height either so it felt a little small.
Of course late afternoon today when I took my FX for a ride I got a flat on the front tire 7 miles from my car. I found a small cut in the tire, but replaced the tube on the side of the trail and rode back to my car. Prob >2500 miles on these current H5 tires so I think I'll need to make a stop at the LBS anyway for tires...and maybe take that test ride again

Also, does anyone by chance have any photos of a XL (22.5") DS4? Just curious to see the actual grips and the top tube/seat tube angles. Thanks!

I awarded myself an FXS4 in January and since then have done some 1200km of which 25-30% on trails/paths. Good comfortable bike once you have changed the awful saddle.(I bought a Sella Anatomica as reccomended here. Expensive once you get it to Europe!) Not happy with the pedals. The tyres are more DRY road than hybrid and I look forward to wearing them out and changing them for something less lethal on wet roads. Not very good on muddy paths either. I have a problem with hands going numb after about 30km but that is probably my problem as I don't think I have sorted out the weight on handlebar problem yet. I'm in the process of fitting end-bars
But all in all a good light bike - excellent brakes and nice transmission.

Thanks. While I still hem and haw on buying a bike, I did order new tires for my 2015 FX 7.2 22.5". I ordered the H5 hard-case ultimate this time (not lite) in the 42mm width. However, the order is delayed and I'm not loving the old 35mm H2's that I "borrowed" from my wife's bike. If the 42mm tires don't arrive at my LBS in the next day or two, they do have the 38mm version of the H5 ultimates. Do you think I'd notice a huge difference? I know it's just 1/8", but want to have as good of a happy medium of grip/cushion/roll as possible. Thanks.
