I used to have Specialized Mondo Pros that came stock on my Tarmac.
The 4000s feel exactly the same.

When I used to religiously pump my tires to max psi, every brand of tire felt like a rock. Now that I'm lazy, I can feel the difference in tires with lower air pressures.

I just replaced my Mondo Comp. May be slightly different from the Pro's but I felt a significant difference on the same PSI. My Mondo's had that rather sharp, angular transition separating the "tread" and the sidewall, whilst the GP is round all over so felt easier to corner. And it feels stickier.
Placebo? Not to me. Actually tried convincing myself it won't make a difference.

I notice a diiference when I go back to my wheels with kryllions or 4 Seasons and try to corner at the same speeds as I get used to on the GP4000S'.

Wait until you hit 1000 miles on the tires. With Mondo's, mine would get cut so bad I'd have to replace them before they wore out, I have no problems with cut tires with GP4000s

having never used gp4ks (and shortly to be in need of some new skins), I decided to look around other sites for reviews on these tires... i see a lot of folks complaining about sidewall durability on the gp's, truth or BS??? the consensus here is extremely positive, but other places seem to gripe about sidewalls getting cut unless you ride on super clean/smooth roads...
what's the real deal??

I have run probably five sets of 4000s. I had two rear tires damaged rather quickly with side wall cuts. One of them was replaced by Performance Bike because I only had it for maybe two days. The other one was probably really old stock that I bought cheap off of Ebay. The other three sets of tires have lasted at least 2500 to 3000 miles. Now I have the Chili Compound version and they are better than the previous verison. The only other tire I have used is the Conti GP4 Season. It was durable and had better side wall protection but felt sluggish and harsh compared to the 4000s. My bike feel more lively, smoother and faster with the 4000s on.

3000 miles so far on my first set of GP4Ks. I ride rutty country roads and through the city quite often. No problems here.
Agreed that proper air pressure really helps. At 120 PSI they are too stiff. I weigh 155 and run 100 psi in the front and 110 in the back.
They are a very smooth ride and confident in corners.

Criterium and road race with GP4000S. The chilli is good for the corners, the tires wear well and are durable. I can feel the difference with a more comfortable ride on the 25c I have been using lately and better grip. Haven't had a flat yet compared to other brands that have flatted in 10 miles.

This is so true, my old tires have so many cuts. I actually switched because my rear tire nearly exploded. There a huge cut down the center of the tire and the threads are sticking out.
Those tires only had 1200 miles on them, so I'll se how the 4000s do

I am purchasing my new bike next week - Scott CR1 Elite. This model comes with Continental Ultra Race. Does anyone know the major difference between the Ultra Race and GP4000s?

I'm running GP 4000 S in 700 x 23 on two bikes and GP 4000 700 x 25 on the other. All said over 5000 miles on these tires with almost 3000 on one set that the rear is finally wearing out on. No sidewall issues and no flats on this set.
Today I had wierd incident with one set. Stopped the bike and was standing taking a break when I heard the hiss of a blown tube and the front tire went flat. I should mention this was a Bontrager racelite xxx lightweight tube. No sign of damage, no debris on the road, and nothing in the tire when I changed it. Not sure what caused the flat.
Most of my riding is on rough chip sealed roads. The 700 x 25 set is on my bad weather bike and sees all sorts of abuse on wet and winter roads. I am extremely pleased with them.

Night and day. Personally I'd remove the Ultra Race and either use them on a trainer or sell them or throw them away. I used some for a little while, virtually no flat protection.

I've been using gp4000s for a couple of years with no problems with cuts. For some reason, I've gotten two in the last couple of months. Both could have been usable with tire boots, but they were about halfway through their usable life, so i just replaced them. I've got a stockpile of these to go through yet though, so I won't be switching to anything else any time soon.

The 4000s is a race oriented tire, you're going to have trade offs in durability for performance. So far I've found the GP4s to be more durable (tread and sidewalls) than the Mich Pro3Race that were on my Fuji, but are not going to be as durable as a beefier tire such as the Gatorskin or the like.
You can't have it all in a tire, and throw in varying road conditions from one rider or another, or even the same rider from one ride or year to another, there's a lot of variables that will cause either long streaks of no problems or constant problems with the same tire.
I need to experiment with slightly lower PSI in my GP4s tires to see if I can get the smoother ride that I liked so much in the P3R's.

Just put 4000s on my second bike, Lemond Croix de fer.
