Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Help me pick 50mm CF Clinchers

Hi everyone so I finally saved enough overtime money to buy my first pair of deep carbon clinchers for training(eventually racing) and I'd like some opinions on what the best 50-60mm carbon clinchers would be.

A little about me...5'9"..155lbs...TT/Sprint style rider. These are going on my Bianchi Infinito(yes I know this is a touring bike but I got it before I knew about geometries and its plenty stiff for sprinting/TT)

My criteria for the wheels is pretty much to be

>less than 1900grams(my fulcrum 7's are 1900)
>at least 50mm
>clincher
>under $1500 new

Models I like:

>Sram S60
>Mavic Cosmic Carbone
>Hed Jet 6
>Anything with exposed carbon weave..aka Mavic style

I plan on putting a few thousand miles on them in the next year or two so I am looking for some workhorses that are stiff in the sprint and smooth in the wind, weight is much less important since I am not much of a climber. I'm completely open to suggestions of off brands and even gigantex based rims if the decals are nice and the hubs are smooth.

Thanks in advance

Josh

I've met a ton of people who disagree with that statement

On to "FLO"....wow those are nice, but their site seems to be sans a way to purchase them or look at the models....are they still making wheels?

My carbon w/ aluminum braking rim wheels have been fine for training and racing for 2 years (Easton EC70 SL). Wheels mentioned or used Zipp 404s should do the trick.

I just got some Boyd 50mm carbon clinchers and i'm real happy with them. I upgraded from Mavic Aksiums and its a world of difference. Holding speeds feels a lot easier and spin up while moving and from a standstill is incredible. Hubs roll forever, they are extremely loud though if your into that, some hate loud hubs. I plan on using them as an all around wheelset. Still recovering from a crash i had back in April so i haven't logged too many miles on them but so far so good. Pics of the wheels on the bike.

Cousin of mine just purchased an Infinito and its a very nice bike. Celeste is one of the best colors for a bike.

Very nice BMC; the wheels really compliment the frame. Zero degree stem? Lp

One of my teammates swears by his Neuvations https://www.neuvationcycling.com/wheels.html. When I finally have the money for some fancy wheels I was planning on getting a pair. They're half the price of the big name brands.

The FLO wheels look like they might come out to almost 2kgrams...do you guys see these as being too heavy next to other toroidal rims like zipp/sram/hed.

How would these compare to say Williams/Boyd who are around the 1500g mark?

The new Soul CA5.0. Carbon fairing, aluminum braking surface and about 200G later than Cosmic Carbone SLs (not to mention a lot cheaper)

They're wrong. You're training. 0.2 mph doesn't make a difference. If it does, pedal harder. That's what training is for.

Wow those are a great deal as well....I wish they had more decal options though. I wonder which one will turn out to be the better value....the FLO 60mm or the Soul CA5.0.

I like the Williams and Boyd but they seem to be about the same as the Soul CA5 and C5 but for slightly more money

Pretty sure the reason you go carbon is for road noise cancellation and lighter rims compared to cheap alloy. Plus I do sprints every day...and yes 2mph in a sprint is noticeable when you're trying to break 38-40mph

Gotdamn that's nice set-up Dubya!

I have a great deal of respect for BMC's (I just didn't like the styling until the current batch...aka "your's").

o god wheres that facepalm picture when you need it. skip the carbon clinchers and go with a set of carbon tubulars after you've started racing.

Everybody is going to recommend the set that they got...so asking here is kind of a moot point...

Boyd, Williams, Psimet, November all look to be using the same rim and are all competitively priced. Seem to be of good quality and build. When you consider price, performance, customer service...these are the brands I would look into.

For an Carbon fairing wheel...the Souls CA's look pretty good.

Theres nothing wrong with riding a deep wheel as a daily. My 50mm's are the only set of wheels I own and they've never given me issues. IMO...the majority of people that do buy deep section wheels are for looks...heck thats why I got my set.

Finally!
I'm liking the full carbon 5.0's!
Graphics are awesome.
Perfect match-up for BBQ.

I'm readying myself for plastic wheels for the summer.

Similar wants as OP: <$1,500., but I'm looking for something that's in the sub-1,300g range and over 50mm.

You haven't done your homework. My carbon clinchers ride harder than my other wheels. Other people report similar. Carbon clinchers, even full carbon, are heavier than the lightest aluminum rims.

That's 0.2 mph, not 2 mph. aero wheels just don't do that much.

The point of training is to make your body better. Not to reach some arbitrary goal. Also, doing sprints every day is a bad way to train.

Since you clearly have not read up on them, carbon clinchers are poor at shedding brake heat. Go down a steep technical descent and you have a good chance of a blowout, or melting your brake pads, or having the rim deform. Braking on carbon rims is not as good as aluminum, and is much worse in the wet. If you want to be fast, you'd do better to spend your money on a powertap.

But go ahead and get the carbon wheels. I'm sure you will look "pro" on them while you do your sprints.
