Bike to Work Day -- "coolest classic" award

Tomorrow is Bike to Work Day in San Diego County, and one of our local cycling clubs is sponsoring a pit shop with "special prize to the coolest vintage bike."

My 1959 Capo is the logical choice.

I have noticed I regularly get little extra for riding a cool vintage bike on Bike to Work days -- esp at stops hosted by bike shops / bike brands.

Usually I choose the Raleigh / Carlton, as it fits the slow-cruising nature of the day.

Good luck, @John E! I think the only thing that could top it would be someone commuting to work with a Cambio Corsa.

... or maybe someone with a 1950s Simplex rod shift in front, or a 1930s Adler with the 3-speed sliding gear transmission in the bottom bracket

Great pic of a Classic, fast commuter:

I'm retired now, but here's a pic of my Seven Ten by my cubie in Washington State some years ago.

It had a yellow blinkie on my Pivo bar + seat post red blinkie, also 5W and 15W Vistalights on the bar powered by a 6 volt rechargeable battery pack. Primitive by today's standards, but quite effective for my pre-dawn commute in on country roads. Don

They used to give out sack lunches to bike commuters on bike to work day in Olympia. Always ran out quickly, but I usually rode up just as they began to set-up and always got a bag. Here are pics of the 710 with a different light set-u. I mostly rode my Seven Ten during Spring & Fall, but rotated thru all my bikes during the dry season. For a Winter Rain Bike, I had a Centurion Pro Tour 15, morphed to a Pro Tour 18. Don

This was my Bike to Work Day bike, only I didn't know it was Bike to Work Day. I guess that doesn't really matter, as long as I biked to work, y'know? I also didn't see a single other person riding to work today. Oh well.

Honesty, I'm trying to bike every day it's not raining and and I don't have a ton of crap to haul

Strange coincidence. I rode my Miyata to work today too. Here it is parked under the wheelchair ramp
at work.

Well, since I'm the only fool who rides a bike to work at my place of employment, I guess I win 'coolest classic' by default...

It was either the '86 Miyata 710 that was this year's choice or my trusty '75 Fuji S-10S

(Pic from last year)

Note the same parking spot! I'm fortunate that I can bring my bike inside and keep it on the loading dock (hence the pallets in the background!)

Hey John, what was the pick for "Coolest Vintage Bike"?

Was it by chance a steel blue Miyata Seven Ten? Don

Since every day is Bike To Work Day for me, I just get to choose which pretty bike I get to show off to all the people who will never look at it... Today it was the third day this work week (fourth overall, starting Sunday) I took my recently acquired, tuned up, then fully rebuilt (waxed the paint while all apart) 1983-or-so Guerciotti, which is most likely a Super Record model given the research and clues I've been able to obtain and decipher. Build thread coming on that. Needless to say, this bike is it.

Phenomenal Italian chassis and an ever capable Japanese (Dura-Ace) drivetrain is a perfect match. We took the very long and incorrect way home, stopping to snap some pictures in the soft glow of a mostly overcast sunset.

Your bikes are looking good, gentlemen. Stares of admiration or not, they are fun to ride on any occasion, and especially so for special occasions.
