This is my second to replace an early production and very tired rusted Basso. This one a mid level, made in 1985 -Commemorative '84 Olympic with LA84 'Arco' paint.
Columbus Tre-tubi. Mixed build: Campy Victory - Triomphe / Regina / Gipiemme Crono/ 3ttt / Modolo / Nisi / tubulars.
A popular paint scheme immediately after Alexi Grewal won the gold (1st US mens for road race) though riding a Pinarello in the similar paint. Story goes Denver Spoke was a sponser of Grewal, and along with Gita imports they arrived to this look. I've also heard reference as being spumoni.
Though its mid race level, its a confident and respectable comfort distance rider. I guess it comes off as just cool, silly, obnoxious Italian as it always gets the nod at group rides! Rare would anyone know what is or what the parts are, anyways.

In 1985, the tretubi model was called the Arrenacia. It was available with Shimano New 600EX for $639 US or mixed Italian (Campagnolo NR derailleurs, Ofmega Super Competition crankset, Modolo Equipe brakes) for $749 US.
The Arco (rainbow) paint scheme was developed for the American Saving-Dia-Compe-Denver Spoke team at a meeting after the Long Beach Bicycle Show. Len Pettyjohn (team manager), Brad Thorne (Dia-Compe), Doug Beeler (Denver Spoke) and Giorgio Andretta (Gita Sporting Goods) all had different opinions as to what the colour should be, so Andretta had the livery combine all the suggested colours.

Some nice late model Basso's guys.
Love the TI model, with a triple no less. Great for climbing I guess, but I think it would require to much thinking for me! lol. Never rode a titanium bike. One day I'll remedy that.

Just picked up this Basso about a month ago. According to the Basso certificate, it’s a 1980 Gap. Basso Panto’d seat post, stem and shifters.

This isn't passing my sanity check. A 1980 wouldn't a have front derailleur hanger unless it's been updated and repainted. What's the serial number?

Serial number is 2992-56. The 56 is off to the side on the BB housing, but the Basso certificate lists it as part of the serial number. Definitely a repaint by Joe Bell. Don’t know what other work he may have done at that time.

Yes fresh paint, Moulton Red. I plan on new decals maybe like the ones on the green one above. I'm thinking of the yellow details with yellow Benotto tape of the day. I have some black tape also, perhaps a fancy wrap with the two. I'm going over the top on this one! I've got 8sp Dura Ace in the que. The Basso was a spray bomb beater proudly Frankensteined with various Campy, Dura Ace, and Maillard!? Hubbed wheels lol.
Currently it is on DA 9sp hubs that I built on Wienman rims with a DA 8 speed cassette, strong and light.
The Basso Gap is one of the most beautiful I've worked on definitely the best paint job, which is still waiting the right conditions for the final clear coat.

Here’s my Ascot with Columbus MS ( Multi Shape) frame, as purchased used with full 9 Sp Chorus. I don’t know if its been repainted. The lavendar is a Basso color. Nesrly every piece of the tubeset is a different shape. O
The other pics I’ve seen of Ascots show Celeste and Orange color combos. Its a little big for me so I’ll eventually look for a Gap, Coral or Lotto frame to transfer the parts to.

I'm happy you were able to find a headset that works! Since you posted that photo of the steerer being cut too short to use a Super Record headset I wondered if it would be too short, period. Glad that's not the case.

Ive discovered the Tange headsets always come thru in the clutch when a low stack headset is needed. Theyre clean, simple, vintage looking and super cheap.

Can anyone confirm if the Columbus decals are navy blue or dark blue on the 82' Basso Gap? Some Google image results seem blue and others dark blue.

I rode to work this morning on my Giro and once I got there I was called by my LBS that the Basso Gap is ready to be picked up. I really like how this build turned out with the components being painted and or anodized black. It's a definite "red bike" upgrade from the Torelli I had last year.
A few pointers were followed regarding drop bar angle and cable loop length so that's how it sits. If it doesn't feel right after a few rides I'll adjust it to my usual spec.
Handlebars are level to the ground and cable loops a tad longer and behind the bars..
Much thanks to Mad Honk jeirvine eom hazetguy for some needed parts and advice.

This one looks very much like a Loto but it doesn't quite quack like one: there's rifling in the steerer tube but not around the BB — no SLX, no Loto, I guess. It's clearly a refinish (could be per the Martelly shop because of the clover sticker on the downtube) and probably an ex-team bike (external TT cable routing and number hanger) so I'm assuming a '92 Collstrop team bike that someone had repainted in made-up yellow/white Basso livery. Tubing would be some double butted Oria set, 27.2 seat post size but not lightweight at over 2,150 kg for the frame (56x56). Basso charges 20 € to look up serials in their records nowadays (and provides you with a "birth certificate" in return...), might still do that, dunno.
Frame is going to clean up nicely with easy spot retouching and I do like the looks of it. Have an 8 speed Campagnolo gruppo to kit it out with so next weekend will be new bike time.
