Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

For every person that wants a quiet freehub there is another who wants a loud one. I used to take time and delve into it for customers until it became completely obvious that no one can even agree on what's loud and what isn't.

There are sounds that can come out of a freehub that one should worry about. A normally operating one, whether loud or quiet, is not one of those sounds. To list the old sage advice: if it's loud enough to bother you then don't coast.

Which, of course, leads manufacturers to produce hubs that makes a lot of noise to make those people buy their hubs.
Don't put words in my mouth here buddy, I didn't say it was better, I said it was MORE EXPENSIVE

And many people think that because quality is expensive, then because something is expensive it must be quality. Hence louder and louder hubs. But your point is well taken

I kinda like loud hubs but the DT Swiss 350 hub on my Light Bicycle wheels is nearly silent. I really have to listen for it.

Must be using the 18t ratchet gear. 54t and 36t are much louder.
