Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

maintaining Fredness

Easy so on the LHT with mismatched bags, and dangling thingys, and big fat tires but... on my newly purchased '05 LeMond Zurich..now what?

Can the mere lack of billboard inspired clothing in juxtaposition with speed play pedals and sassy silver shoes be enough?

Do I dare wear black MT shorts that might suggest a congruous intent?

Can adding a blinky salvage my image of not looking like I don't have an image?

Oh so many questions.......this is not an easy time for me.

Try bib shorts with no shirt combined with patform pedals and chuck taylors. To date that's best look I have seen on the road

also tightly whiteys under shorts so you get the VPL going would good too.

Don't forget to mount a mirror to your helmet and a bell to your handlebars.

You shouldn't care so much about trying to look like you don't care about what you look like. Just ride.

A big bulbous helmet worn backwards pretty much covers it.

Sorry, but you either a Fred or you're not. If you are, it just comes natural. If you're not and try to pretend, well that just makes you a fred-poser.

This raises an intersting question. Which is worse? A Fred or a Fred-poser?

I though I was a Fred, but since it was pointed out that conscious thought about my appearance and my stuff makes me a Fred-poser, I can ever truly be a Fred.

I've been living a lie all along, and I didn't realize it.

My admiration for a Real-Fred now knows no limits

I think you could be a fred on that 8 year old bike.
Just give it time, it should happen naturally.

I have not thought about maintaining fredliness. Does that make me a natural?

Shimano sandals. I wear them and am at peace with my inner Fred.

I'm thinking of offering fred lessons. Would you like to be my first customer?

Much like a sports coach who live vicariously through his athletes, I hope to achieve the same thing- because you know the old saying "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach". My success will be in seeing you achieve levels of fredliness that I could only dream about obtaining.

I think once you understand the Fred, it becomes unattainable. It's almost Buddhist in its being. The Fred butterfly effect.

It's hard to become a true Fred, but certainly using a 9 speed Ultegra right shifter with a 3 speed Sora left shifter, combined with a double crank, and an old rear wheel with a 7 speed freehub, using only 7 of the 9 speed cogs with a spacer will go a long way toward winning those precious Fred votes with your riding club.
Of course you'll have to do your part with your cycling garb.
