Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

How is "Bike to Work" week in your area?

Didn't see any uptick so far this week. I think the sub 50-degree weather hasn't helped either. Friday is "Bike to Work" Day, hopefully there will be more riders.

How about where you are?

On my commute I've seen more riders, especially on the way home.

Bike to work day is insane in the morning. One giant clusterf.
I find crits to be safer than riding that day.

LOL, I won't be participating this year since I broke my chain yesterday, doubt I'll have the replacement here in time.

LOL, I won't be participating this year since I broke my arm a couple weeks ago, doubt it'll have the chance to knit back together in time.

It will probably be the usual thing, though. The city sponsors a downtown event and encourages people to ride from all corners of the city toward downtown. Our mayor, the city planner in charge of bike infrastructure, and several other officials will ride. The cool thing is, they ride frequently anyway. (The mayor started bicycle commuting 20+ years ago and holds "rolling town hall meetings" throughout the good weather months).

Shouldn't this question be asked in the commuting forum? Anyway, I always wonder who are all of those riders on "bike to work day" because I sure don't see even half the number on any other day of the year. Do they only commute to work once a year?

In my area --- heck, just in my office --- there are many who only commute on this one day. But I still think it is a good thing that gives more visibility and acceptance to the idea of commuting by bike. Hopefully that translates into better safety and convenience for those of us who do commute on other days of the year.

Really? It's warm and sunny in Seattle.

Lots of bike commuters. On Ride Your Bike to Work Day, they set up tables and give out free cliff bars and stuff. It's actually better to change my route to avoid it.

What? The mornings were cold on Mon/Tue, but the highs were still over 60. It was 53 or so when I left the house at 640 this morning, heading to a high of 85 today. In DC/NoVA I've seen masses of bike commuters this week...definitely an uptick.

I am in the outer burbs near Leesburg. On both Monday and Tuesday mornings, my Garmin said the temps were 45 and 42 respectively. On the way home yesterday, it was 55. Today is much better, but the morning was still only 50.

Temp this year has been pretty wild so far.

The weather here this week is and has been spectacular if not unseasonably warm. Yeah, I'm seeing more people riding in the morning. I'm a regular regardless of a designated ride week, but I did finish off my ride this morning chatting it up with a guy who works next door to my office building. There is a big promotion in urban Salt Lake City this weekend that culminates with a nice century ride on Saturday. They usually get 2000 riders or so out for that. It's fun, but I'm just doing my regular club ride that day.

Same here, on the other side of Colorado.
June is Bike Month here in Colorado.

A few months ago I went to a local urban planning seminar and sat in on a round table discussion about local Bike Month activities. I did offer some suggestions but I don't know if anyone will run with them. Since BTW Day is at the end of the month I suggested why not have some activities starting at the beginning of the month to help people get familiar with riding a bike around town more. Maybe a clinic on picking a commuter bike or basic bike maintenance. Get people on their bikes before BTW Day. Then by BTW Day they have some experience in commuting at least a few times, maybe they will get addicted.

My commute route doesn't take me near any of the usual BTW Day activities (breakfasts) but I usually arrange to come in to work late that day and go to one of the BTW Day gatherings to show support, then head on to work. Last year they said that 1600 people showed up at the two BTW Day breakfast gatherings on town. (city of 50,000 here)

We have a bike group here that is very active in planning events up to the official Bike To Work day, doing a lot of the things you suggest. I did see a lot more people riding with full backpacks this week. Carrying their work clothes no doubt. But alas, where does one shower?
